The Fourth Bear: A Nursery Crime
by Jasper Fforde
Emily's Comments:
"Jasper Fforde is one of my favorite authors, and when you start this new series you'll find out why. His kooky alternate universe writing, and familiar characters from old nursery rhymes and classics make it the perfect mix of mystery, sci-fi, fantasy, and just about any other genre you can name. It's hard to find an author that you can recommend to everyone, but Fforde fits the bill." (read more)

Out Stealing Horses: A Novel
by Per Petterson
Lisa's Comments:
"This book is mesmerizing. The author dances with words in such a way that I found myself rereading phrases as if they were poetry. Trond...is 67-years old with an aching back and a life of solitude. He lives a simple life, but due to a chance meeting with someone he once knew, the summer of 1948 comes rushing back the summer when he was 15...a summer that shaped his life....The author's attention to color, detail, feeling, and words actually took me to Trond's cabin where I could swear that I could feel the snow and see the sunrise and the colors in kitchen." Searoad
by Ursula K. Le Guin
LuAnn's Comments:
"I found this book absolutely fascinating. Several years ago, my husband and I were traveling north along the Oregon Coast. It was late and all the motels were displaying 'no vacancy' signs. We decided to turn down a road and head into a small town along the coast. It was a quaint little village with cabins for rent. The description in Searoad of the village of Klatsand is nearly identical to that town we stayed at and I was able to relate to the story as it unfolded. And what a story it was! Interesting, real characters who had to deal with what life threw at them. A conglomeration of how each individual fit into the town and yet, maintained their own identities in their private lives. Excellent reading!" (read more)

The Dud Avocado
by Elaine Dundy
Amber's Comments:
"I read in a review that this book was like an earlier Bridget Jones....I suppose on the surface they may seem similar young woman trying to find her way who gets into seemingly impossible situations. But The Dud Avocado is more than that....There are timeless truths, humor, sadness, and anything else you might encounter in life." (read more)

Water for Elephants
by Sara Gruen
Effie's Comments:
"Sara Gruen really paints a picture of a society (the circus) and an era (The Depression) as if she had actually inhabited both. She writes from a man's point of view with an authority that makes you think she's just taken on a female pen name....All the 'every-day,' exotic details she has filled the book with make for wonderful reading." The Poisonwood Bible (P.S.)
by Barbara Kingsolver
Sara's Comments:
"It's been a long time since a book has affected me as much as The Poisonwood Bible. Kingsolver reminds us that 'ignorance is not innocence' and reveals to us our complicity as Americans in the tragedy of the Congo. No longer can I claim ignorance or innocence, but by accepting my small portion of responsibility, I feel empowered, and compelled, to make changes in my life. The Poisonwood Bible is much more than just the emotional 'women's literature' that we've come to expect from Oprah's Bookclub. Instead it's a passionate call to arms for all Americans to examine our unacknowledged privilege and do something about it." (read more)

Dreams of the West: The History of the Chinese in Oregon 1850 - 1950
by Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and Portland State University and Ooligan Press
Katherine's Comments:
"An Oregonian for over 50 years, I've of course been marginally aware of Chinese cultural influence in the state who hasn't been to Chinatown in Portland? However, until I read this book, I had no idea what a tremendous contribution has been made by the Chinese to the basic fabric of our economic success." (read more)

The Queen's Own Fool
by Jane Yolen and Robert J. Harris
Sharon's Comments:
"This is an enlightening read that turns Mary, Queen of Scots, from a flat historical figure into a real person with humor and honor and human feelings and failings....Through her eyes, the reader is given a glimpse of the political intrigue that made 16th century life difficult and dangerous, especially for a person of royal birth. This book is a perfect entry point for YA readers to learn about the history of one of Europe's most fascinating queens." (read more)

by Gina Nahai
Elaine's Comments:
"[C]ombines with an artist's exactitude the political oppression of Iran with a tragic story of a family's fate....Nahai poignantly reveals how the arbitrary rules of government and society punish anyone who is different and reveals how conforming to this lack of freedom distorts every choice and concept in her characters' lives....The writing is beautiful...nothing short of brilliant." Better Than Homemade: Amazing Foods
by Carolyn Wyman
Jennifer's Comments:
"Clamato with beer? You betcha! What food is used by technicians when preforming MRIs as a marker because it doesn't melt? How do you make the perfect Cool Whip dollop? Why did Tang become the drink of astronauts? All these questions and so much more are answered in this book. Once I picked it up, I couldn't put it down because there were so many amazing facts about everyday foods. Why did Swanson produce a 'banana flavored' fried chicken? Why did the Pillsbury Doughboy not participate in the 'Got Milk' campaign? Did you know there was celery flavored Jell-o? This is a great book for anyone who remembers Kool-Aid Man bursting through walls or who has ever wondered what is in Spam." (read more)
