Wanderlust: A History of Walking
Wanderlust: A History of Walking
by Rebecca Solnit

Andrew's Comments:
"Andrew's comments:
"Solnit's book is a masterpiece in sustained mediatation on a single, seemingly inconsequential topic: walking. Beginning with recent discussions among primatologists and anthropologists that the bipedal walking is not only typical of, but fundamental to what it means to be human, Solnit launches into a cultural and political history of walking....This book was unfairly lost in the crowd of micro-microhistories that flooded shelves a few years ago " of salt, of cod, etc. " but it stands above the rest as Solnit blends personal account, literary history, and political passion into a fascinating and compelling homage and plea for ambulatory culture and ethics. Read this book as the precursor to her more recent A Field Guide to Getting Lost."" (read more)

My Little Yellow Taxi

K.'s Comments:
"K.'s comments:
"What a wonderful book for toddlers. Since I received it my daughter has not put it down yet. This is the perfect book for the 'hands-on' learning type of a child or with a minimal attention span. Since my daughter and I read this book for the first time, she is more aware of what I am doing when I get out of the van to put gas in or what I am doing when I readjust the mirrors. The way that the author, Stephen T. Johnson, illustrates with the many very durable take-out pieces for the reader to mimic the actions is great way of keeping the child's interest and attention. I would say this is a must have book for all children."" (read more)

No Sheep for You: Knit Happy with Cotton, Silk, Linen, Hemp, Bamboo & Other Delights
by Amy R Singer

Julia's Comments:
"Julia's comments:
"I have problems knitting with wool (a combination of various allergies and skin sensitivities) but I've have been frustrated getting other yarn to work....Singer starts out by describing the properties of various types of non-animal fibers (her one exception is silk)....She has tables which let you know the relative weight, elasticity, strength, etc. of various yarns. Singer also has a long section on using swatches (or 'geeky things') to help figure out if your non-wool fiber will work in a particular pattern....This is a great addition to any knitting library."" The Birthday Party: A Memoir of Survival
by Stanley N. Alpert

Mike's Comments:
"Mike's comments:
"Stanley Alpert's memoir of his ordeal is compelling and refreshing. Compelling because it is a story of survival and well deserved closure. Refreshing because it is written in a very human voice....Though the crime remembered was heinous, the story is told with compassion for all the circumstances before and after, that complete the story. I was around then, I lived through this like so many other Americans and read all the books. "Rachel Cusk illuminates the dignity and tragedy of the everyday lives of ordinary women in a bourgeois suburb. Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-deficit Disorder (05 - Old Edition)

Janet's Comments:
"Janet's comments:
"As a 'muddy-boots' biology teacher, who followed NW naturalists Kozlov and Kruckenberg on field trips, I lament the trend away from the 'natural history' approach in new high school biology curricula to a more 'human centered' and molecular view. Our NW states include such a variety of ecosystems; marine, montane, desert, grasslands, etc. that it is a shame that more students (especially urban students) are not directly familiar with the organisms inhabiting these ecosystems. Richard Louv has a message for teachers, parents, lawyers, urban planners and theologians."" (read more)

Devil and Daniel Johnston

Lukas's Comments:
"Lukas's comments:
"For quiet a few, madness and artistic creation are still peas in a pod. This is mostly rubbish of course, so it is striking to come across an artist that is genuinely teetering on (and sometimes crashing over)the brink of madness. Such is the case with Daniel Johnston, a longtime cult fave and hipster touchstone. Far from being a garden variety eccentric, the Southern born and bred Johnston had some heavyweight mental problems and was in and out of institutions. This didn't stop him from creating lo-fi, Beatlesque songs (often about love or super heroes) and oddball art....Even if you have no interest in his music, Johnston is a truly fascinating figure."" "Michele's comments:
"One must be a brave soul...to take on the challenge of not shopping for an entire year. Narrated in a personal and surprisingly non-dogmatic style, Levine recounts her adventure month by month, from the initial task of enlisting her partner's support (he insists that wine IS a necessity) to her frantic collapse when she thinks she might have lost her SmartWool socks and won't be able to replace them with another pair. In an era in which we know that consumerism is as bad for us as for the planet, but do not quite know what to do about it, Levine offers up the possiblity of a critical consumerism that begins with an awareness of our own habits.""
