The Atomic Bazaar: The Rise of the Nuclear Poor
by William Langewiesche

Paul's Comments:
"Paul's comments:
"If you want to understand how North Korea got the bomb and how Iran came to be on the edge of becoming a nuclear power this is the book to read. The author does not look away from the involvement of a number of European companies in the process. He outlines the willingness of some firms to skirt or avoid export requirements to make a sale. An important book on recent history."" (read more)

The Whistling Season
The Whistling Season
by Ivan Doig

Stephanie's Comments:
"Stephanie's comments:
"The opening gambit of this novel is deceptively simple. The narrator, looking back from 1957, remembers the year his newly widowed father answers an ad for a housekeeper. The story of the impact of the housekeeper and her brother, Morris, on this Montana family creates a wonderful old-fashioned novel with well-developed characters, plot twists, and a loving sense of place. The final glory of this book is Doig's love of language (both Latin and English) and the precision with which he tells this tale. This book has made me a devoted Ivan Doig fan."" (read more)

Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda
Not a Good Day to Die: The Untold Story of Operation Anaconda
by Sean Naylor

Meghan's Comments:
"Meghan's comments:
"With a family member serving in Iraq, I decided it was time to read some war narratives (outside of Tim O'Brien on Vietnam, who, I think, is one of the best and most important storytellers of all time). Not a Good Day to Die was recommended to me as a starting point. While there were times I had a hard time following what was technically going on...I was surprised at what a fluid read this was. I was also impressed by the narrative, since it goes so far beyond news headlines and gives readers an understanding (in as far as possible) of what modern warfare is really like. This was indeed an excellent starting point for a whole world of information on war and on war in the Middle East."" (read more)

Alice in Sunderland: An Entertainment

Josh's Comments:
"Josh's comments:
"[A] remarkable book that has revealed to me the rich history of the city and its inspiration of much of Carroll's most famous works. Sunderland has always been considered the ugly little sister of the now glamorous (and hated) Newcastle, but Talbot's book cannot help but warm the heart of anyone with a connection to the home of the Mackems: so much of England's history and culture emanated from the area....[T]he illustrations and painstaking research are superb. The Blood of Flowers: A Novel
The Blood of Flowers: A Novel
by Anita Amirrezvani

Nassim 's Comments:
"Nassim's comments:
"As an Iranian woman and new novelist...I try to read all the fiction and memoirs published by Iranian-Americans. Anita Amirrezvani's beautiful novel is my new favorite in this genre. The Blood of Flowers, set in 17th Century Isfahan under rule by one of the greatest monarchs of Iran, details the lives of women from a Persian woman's perspective....This is a coming of age story of a feisty teenage girl who finds herself in unsavory circumstances following the death of her father. Her passion for weaving carpets becomes the key to her survival and her adult education....In a time of mounting tension between Iran and the United States, we need books that open doors to Persian culture more than ever before. The Blood of Flowers is storytelling at its very best; it humanizes the people of Iran, brings alive a rich period in history little understood in the West, and unravels the intriguing mysteries of the Persian carpet."" Gutted: Down to the Studs in My House, My Marriage, My Entire Life
by Lawrence LaRose

Scott's Comments:
"Scott's comments:
"At the beach with friends recently, as usual not wanting to read the 'serious' or 'should' reads that I brought, I stumbled upon Gutted. Since I was immediately disturbing the household laughing loudly and sharing (rather frequently) the especially good bits, one of my friends soon tried to take it away while I was grabbing a sandwich. My wife made me stop reading it in bed, as I was keeping her up with my incessant giggling, and having trouble resisting sharing every few pages....Scary, twisted, hilarious, and ultimately absolutely satisfying. Highly recommended for young couples and home re-modelers " or anyone thinking of entering into either of those nutty adventures."" (read more)
