The Sidewalk Artist
by Gina Buonaguro and Janice Kirk
Martina's Comments:
"I was hooked from the very first page and found the book nearly impossible to put down. I think, at one time or another, every girl has wished they could be in Tulia Rose's shoes and travel to Paris and Italy alone, meet a handsome artist and fall in love (and if the truth be told, I fell in love with Raffaello, too). Through Tulia's sidewalk artist, we learn about Raphael, whom I'm sure we have all heard of, but don't know much about.... On top of all that, the book had me in tears, which isn't an easy feat.
I can easily say that this is one of the best books I've ever read and it's among the top five books I've read this year already. You don't need to be a history buff to enjoy this book." (read more)

Selected by Ron from King City, Oregon

Paul of Dune (Dune)
by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson
Ron's Comments:
"I read the original Dune by Frank Herbert in 1966 and was hooked. I looked forward to each addition to the series. When Frank suddenly died in 1986 he left the story unfinished but left pages of notes that his son Brian and Kevin Anderson used to create prequels and finish the story. With Paul Of Dune they are beginning to fill in some of the holes. This novel fills a big gap between the Original Dune and Dune Messiah and makes it easier to understand the events that follow and what motivated Paul." (read more)

Selected by Margaret from Santa Monica, California
The Pox Party (The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation, #01)
by M. T. Anderson
Margaret's Comments:
"Even if I had known or remembered that this was by the author of Feed — which I liked quite a bit — it would not have done much to prepare me for this one. I was actually startled by how good this is. It is very encouraging to think that there are teens out there reading such a beautifully-written, sophisticated book. Have faith. Recommended for ages 14 and up, including adults." (read more)

Selected by Frank from Jacksonville, Florida
The Art of the Short Story
by Dana Gioia and R.S. Gwynn
Frank's Comments:
"Poet Laureate Dana Gioia knows his stuff. A problem with anthologies is that too often the wrong stories by the right writers are chosen. In this case almost none of that is present...Mr. Gioia does a great service by choosing many stories that these days are almost forgotten by false-psuedo-intellectual leftists in academia who think they are avant garde.
The back of the book promises truly great commentary that might rival the best editions of Brooks and Warren's Understanding Fiction or Tate and Gordon's The House of Fiction." (read more)

The Familiar Stranger
by Christina Berry
Shaun's Comments:
"I will admit: I didn't know where The Familiar Stranger was going to go. After reading the plot synopsis on the back, I kept thinking, "Hmm... is this going to really grab me... or is it just going to play out like a Christian soap opera?" Thankfully, it didn't take me very long before I realized that new author Christina Berry had put together some very suspenseful ideas with Melody Carlson-esque characters. And I definitely couldn't stop reading." (read more)

A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love, and Faith in Stages
by Kristin Chenoweth
Marcus's Comments:
"Kristin Chenoweth's autobiography, A Little Bit Wicked, is a fun, funny, sometimes self-deprecating look at this hugely talented vocalist/actress' career thus far....This is an enjoyable, fun read. If you're a fan of this talented lady or just a fan of Broadway and musicals, you will find A Little Bit Wicked to be a lot of fun. Highly recommended." (read more)

Pig Candy (08 Edition)
by Lise Funderburg
Mary Ann's Comments:
"I just finished reading Pig Candy and what a touching and moving book it was. When I got the book, I did not realize that it was going to hit so close to home....The path you took me on with your father only brought back the wonderful memories of my time with my father and his quiet but determined fight with the cancer. I lost him in 2000 but not before he was able to hold my first grand-daughter. To see him hold her and look at her with such love will always be held in my heart. Born and raised in a small town in the south (Mississippi), I was able to picture every aspect of your story descriptions that you gave the reader.
Thank you for such a wonderful book and you have my prayers in the loss of your father also." (read more)

The Curious Garden
by Peter Brown
Kim's Comments:
"Portland isn't the only city going green! New York City has been busy transforming an old raised railroad into a green trail that runs along the west side of Manhattan. Inspired by NYC's just-opened High Line Park Above the City, The Curious Garden shows what a single urban kid can do to transform drab into dramatic, grungy into green. A must-buy for urban parents who want to empower their kids to see green possibilities all around." (read more)

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
by Judith Barrett
Stephanie's Comments:
"This is the most brilliant book for children! I read it at least 20 times in one year all through elementary. It was my favorite, it captures the short attention span of a child to read it. The story is all so surreal that you get lost in in. It's truly the best and I recommend it to everyone young and old. I'm still looking for it to have as my own." (read more)

How to Make Love to Adrian Colesberry
by Adrian Colesberry
Brynne's Comments:
"I read this on the advice of a friend, and couldn't put it down. ....thoroughly enjoyable and laughing out loud is common while you naughtily play the voyeur immersing yourself in the life of everyman, Adrian. Some parts create an I-feel-awkward-for-you feeling in your stomach while you giggle, and some of you will find it kind of...So is it borderline erotica disguised as bookish humor wrapped up in TMI? An enthusiastic, Yes!" (read more)

The Tortilla Curtain
by T. C. Boyle
Natalie's Comments:
"T.C. Boyle does a beautiful job of intertwining the tragic lives of multiple characters. He exposes the chasm between the privileged and the poor ....The callousness of the rich, contrasted with the immigrant's struggle to survive is heart breaking. Being a LA resident, the book really touched me — but the themes are universal and you won't want the novel to end." (read more)
