The Road
The Road
by Cormac McCarthy

Leslie's Comments:
"At once unbearable to read and impossible to put down, this book took my breath away from the start and I held it until the last page. This book kept me up turning the pages late into the night, and kept me awake even longer after turning out the light while Cormac McCarthy's vivid imagery held my imagination captive. The phrase "triumph of the human spirit" is tired and over-used, but it is truly the best description for this book." (read more)

Six Suspects
Six Suspects
by Vikas Swarup

MaryAlice's Comments:
"Six Suspects is a big, chewy mystery. Vikas Swarup whose Q & A became the academy award winning, Slumdog Millionaire, weaves the individual stories of a Bollywood movie star, a hapless, gullible Texan, a sweet stone-age tribesman, a wily bureaucrat, a handsome young thief and a cunning government official around a murder. By the last page, I could smell the curry. It was great." (read more)

My Abandonment
by Peter Rock

Stacy's Comments:
"Author Peter Rock did his research for this novel based on a true story of a man and his daughter living in Forest Park in Portland, OR. While he couldn't know the moments they lived, you feel as if he does, as you make Caroline's stealthy way through the days and unseen paths of her hidden world. A suspenseful and empathic journey." Disappearing Ingenue
by Melissa Pritchard

Noelle's Comments:
"As always, Melissa Pritchard delivers a poignant, devilishly humorous book. Like all of her other books, the words themselves are both beautiful on the page, and extraordinary to read. Pritchard has almost TOO much talent, which puts her in a category of her own. She, herself, is an ingenue, a writer of the highest quality and form, publishing books which will resonate in her readers' hearts and minds for years to come." (read more)

Confessions of a Teen Sleuth: A Parody
Confessions of a Teen Sleuth: A Parody
by Chelsea Cain

Dorene's Comments:
"Hilarious parody in the form of a memoir of Nancy Drew. Her roommate at Vassar, Carolyn Keene, stole Nancy's stories and got a lot of the details wrong so here Nancy sets the story straight, and also explains what happened after. Did she marry Ned? What were the Hardy boys really like? Who secretly hated Bess? Why did Nurse Cherry Ames have a vendetta against Nancy? The appearance of other fictional teen sleuths adds to the farce and makes for a quick, fun read." (read more)

"For most who pick up Push, they know what they are getting themselves into. It is a hard book about horrifically taboo topics and circumstances I feel most Americans refuse to acknowledge even exist. For those who have no idea what the book entails, I am sure that when they finish the first paragraph, they have tears in their eyes and a resolve to finish the book no matter how disturbing the content." The Stormchasers
by Jenna Blum

Leigh's Comments:
"Reading this book, I felt as if I was in the car storm-chasing along with the characters. I could see the storms materializing in front of me, even though I have never lived in the Midwest and witnessed severe weather such as that described in the story. The author also does such a great job with the characters that I felt as if Charles were my twin. The ending was a little too tidy but overall, I really enjoyed this book." (read more)

Lindsay's Comments:
"I loved this story, one of a doctor-and-dad giving away one of his twins due to Down's syndrome. It is both shocking and heartbreaking. But I have to agree with the author that the most intriguing aspect of this story is the way so many lives are altered forever because of one decision. You won't want to wait to find out how the characters lives unfold." (read more)

All Things Bright and Beautiful
by James Herriot

Madison's Comments:
"Possibly the most entertaining of James Herriot's captivating autobiographical narratives, "All Things Bright and Beautiful" chronicles Mr. Herriot's Yorkshire veterinary practice in the 1930's. Naturally a narrative for animal lovers of all ages, readers will find themselves laughing aloud at Herriot's hilarious attempts to woo and court his future wife, Helen. Teeming with the antics of characters in the fullest sense of the word, made all the more charming by the fact that their stories are true! Simply a delight for all ages." (read more)

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: A Novel

"Every once in a while I run across a book that grabs me, that brings me to tears and laughter, to knowing and unknowing. I've read many books that I can't put down because I can't wait to find out what happens, but Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer is the rare book that I simply didn't want to finish because I knew that I would never again meet the character -- for the first time -- that I'd fallen in love with. The Fifth of March: A Story of the Boston Massacre (Great Episodes)
by Ann Rinaldi

Kristina's Comments:
"Wow. I would just like to start off by saying that this is one of the most moving books you will read. The Fifth of March is the story of one girl's experience before and during the Boston Massacre. Ann Rinaldi does an amazing job at making you believe that you are actually back in time during the pre-revolution days. I got to understand so much about their culture and feelings of the British. This book was so powerful and trust me it is not just one of "those historical novels". It actually engages the reader and are devouring the book before the third chapter. I would suggest this to any reader. You will not be disappointed." (read more)

Hold Me Closer, Necromancer
by Lish McBride

Jen 's Comments:
"Lish McBride's book thoroughly delighted me. Each page kept me clamoring for more magic and intrigue and comments from sidekick character, Ramon, who made me laugh out loud more than once. Protagonist and novice necromancer Sam heads up a cast of characters, human and otherwise, who kept me on my toes and made me care what happened to them. McBride's sense of humor, sense of the supernatural, and sense of what makes a good story are impressive. Do yourself a favor, and read this book. Stat." (read more)

Jen's Comments:
"Brilliant. It was strange to get one third of this book from Indiespensable, but that was enough to get me hooked. Now I own 1.3 copies, and no regrets. Mix Irish boarding schools, religion in the modern world, the mysteries of the 14-year-old mind, doughnut shops, text message haiku, and quantum mechanics -- and the result is funny, terrible, poignant and beautiful. The kind of book to inspire the right sort of cliches, like: "It will stay with you for a long time."" (read more)

Nomansland
Nomansland
by Lesley Hauge

Erin's Comments:
"I began reading this book expecting something like The Hunger Games. The story is in that same vein of dystopian futures that there have been so many books about lately for young adults. But what I found was so different from The Hunger Games and so provocative that I'm not sure I have anything to compare it to. The premise is that sometime, far in the future, a colony of woman have isolated themselves on an island, living completely without men. In fact, men are the enemy. What was so fascinating and so well done with this story is the dissection of gender roles. While this story could have easily been an affirmation of feminism, a world where men are unnecessary (which has been written before), it does not stray there. I'd definitely recommend this to any female reader, and even the male ones. It's not a romance, its not an epic, and its not exactly an adventure. It is a venture into a possible future, and an exploration of our present." (read more)

A Cup of Normal
A Cup of Normal
by Devon Monk

Sharon's Comments:
"What a wonderful collection of stories! Surprising, dark, funny, clever, touching, heartbreaking -- it's all here. Strong characters who have been tempered by life and come out tough and resilient, without losing the humanity (even when they're not quite human) that makes them caring, compassionate, and loving. "Probe" made me cry it was so beautiful. And the language in the story of Stigin Niddle ("Leeward to the Sky") is reminiscent of Ray Bradbury -- and I thought no one could do Bradbury. This is a collection you'll want to go back to time and again. You'll always get something new out of it, and never get tired of it. I only hope Monk collects more of her short work together!" The characters are nutty and/or mean and/or devious and/or smart but not over the top. One might run into ( or have your dinner interrupted by a call from) someone very similar. Born to Rock
by Gordon Korman

Katherine's Comments:
"My 12 year-old son talked me into taking this book with me on a business trip recently. I was a little reluctant, but was surprised how quickly I slid into Leo Caraway's world. The characters were terrific with a lot of range and the ring of authenticity. I loved the story of this seemingly normal high school senior who got caught up in the world of rock 'n roll as he tried to solve a dilemma about attending college. For those of us who lived the New Wave and Punk Rock era, there was a lot to enjoy in the characters of King Maggot and his entourage. The book treads some interesting waters -- issues regarding biological parents, aging idols, roadies, and revival rock tours. There's some really fine work here about teen identities, too. I was unexpectedly drawn in and found it very hard to willingly set down the book until it was over. Who knew teen fiction could be so good?" (read more)

I often think about it, and it still brings a grin when some of the more unfortunate (actual) current events are being discussed ...
