Dune
Dune
by Frank Herbert

Carol's Comments:
"I have read this book more or less every year since I was a teen, several decades back now. It's the nuances of the characters that never fail to delight me. The description of Arrakis (Dune) is incredibly detailed, one literally gets lost in the story and on the planet. Truly, one of the great masterpieces ever written." (read more)

The Singular Mark Twain: A Biography
by Fred Kaplan

John's Comments:
"Easily the best and most thorough examination of both Twain and his work. Kaplan does a magnificent job showing how Twain embodied all the different parts of America and how this came out in his writings. Can't recommend enough for literature or Twain fans." (read more)

Straight Man: A Novel
Straight Man: A Novel
by Richard Russo

Caitlin's Comments:
"This book is perfection....Devastatingly poignant and funny, I found myself in tears and hysterics more than once - and often at the same time. Russo's ability to capture who these people are and what they are about is second to none. This is the book I make everyone read." (read more)

Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle
Empire of Illusion: The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle
by Chris Hedges

Lowell's Comments:
"His book carefully documents the illusion of democracy that exists today, and how the convergence of government, corporations and the military have taken away real democracy, i.e. democracy no longer exists in America. As well as the complicity of the media in substituting illusion for reality. Today our political system has become a culture that rewards hypocrisy and irresponsibility rather than serious efforts to solve America's problems." (read more)

Birds Without Wings
by Louis de Bernieres

Russell's Comments:
"A full scale "Historical" novel with a dash of Magical Realism thrown in. Setting "Oriental" Turkish and Greece, Bernieres develops multiple, colorful characters, you will fall in love with. Touching on issues spanning the whole of the human condition, yet with a simple, direct approach that captures your interest. I couldn't put it down." (read more)

Girl in Landscape
Girl in Landscape
by Jonathan Lethem

Alison's Comments:
"Girl in Landscape is a beautifully written science fiction story about a girl coming of age on a strange new planet. The main character, Pella Marsh, finds her life drastically changing and many demands are put upon her by her family, her new home and by the very small community she has been brought to. Lonely and confused, she finds solace in the planet itself. This story is unique and moving. One of my all time favorites!" (read more)

The Lunatic, the Lover, and the Poet
The Lunatic, the Lover, and the Poet
by Myrlin Hermes

Mead's Comments:
"This lush, luxuriant recasting of the Hamlet story gives us Shakespeare's doomed Dane as seen through the eyes of Horatio, the beloved BFF seen only briefly in the famous play....[Y]ou don't have to know the play well to appreciate this lightly erotic love story and its many rhapsodies; it has its own pleasures, in abundance." American Romances
American Romances
by Rebecca Brown

Dawn's Comments:
"Buy this book. Then take every notion you've ever had about essays, wad them up into a little ball and toss them. Brown's essays are thoughtful and provocative in a wild and weird way. Her writing is gorgeous, as usual, and splendidly enjoyable. Each time I read one of the essays in this book, I find a new delight. Where else do Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Beach Boys intersect on an historical trajectory that weaves coincidence into an inquiry into the legacy of violence? Or Gertrude Stein and Oreo cookies -- enough said, I don't want to spoil endings. It's all there in American Romances." (read more)

The White Tiger
The White Tiger
by Aravind Adiga

Leslie 's Comments:
"[A] compelling narrative about one man's ascent in modern India. Our narrator, the charismatic Balram, presents the story of his life thus far in the form of letters to Chinese premier Wen Jiabao, intending to school the leader in true Indian entrepreneurialism. (Whether or not the correspondence actually reaches its intended destination is well beyond the point.) Humorous and eye-opening, this book is easy to read but difficult to forget." (read more)

The Coffee Trader (Ballantine Reader's Circle)
by David Liss

Daniel's Comments:
"I've read this book twice now and really enjoyed the sights, smells (particularly the smells) and sounds of 17th century Amsterdam. The characters were interesting and the story compelling. I enjoyed not only the peek into the markets of the period, but the openess of Amsterdam to those shunned elsewhere." (read more)

The Disappeared
by Kim Echlin

Carole's Comments:
"One of the best novels I have ever read. Echlin's story encompasses the extremes of the human experience and you, as the reader, from page 1, cannot be broken from her spell. ...Read this book, but if you are like me, you won't be able to put it down AND, you'll be digesting it (and its powerful imagery) for days afterward." The Old Iron Road: An Epic of Rails, Roads, and the Urge to Go West
by David Haward Bain

Howard's Comments:
"David Bain writes in an easy, fluid style that makes you embrace this book like an old friend. ...Unlike some authors who insist on hitting you over the head with their view of the world, he makes you a passenger in the journey, treating you more like an old friend who he has trusted as his navigator." The Art of Hellboy
The Art of Hellboy
by Mike Mignola

Ron's Comments:
"Mike Mignola made it a standard to put a section in the back of his Hellboy books containing excerpts from his sketchbooks that pertained to the story you just read. Those sketches and notes detailed his creative process and showed the evolution of an item, character, etc. from the eyes of the artist. If you normally skip that part, skip this book. If that section of his books interests you, then do yourself a favor and pick this up. It's all that, and a bit more indepth. Definitely worth the look." (read more)

The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse
The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse
by Robert Rankin

Sarah's Comments:
"I actually bought this book purely for the title...the title is so rockin-awesome that it deserves four stars all on its own. The story itself is bizarre and a little unnerving. The main character, Jack['s], personality is wildly erratic, fluctuating between a retarded 2 year old and a petulant old coot who has starred in too many pulp detective novels. However, Jack's fluctuations are balanced by the interminably likable and savvy Eddie Bear....The action is swift, the mystery is sufficiently unpredictable (without being tripe) and the inside jokes are effectively sly. A satisfying, breezy slice of pulpy, campy fun!" (read more)

Ad Hoc at Home

Ehrrin's Comments:
"I've long lusted after a meal at one of Thomas Keller's restaurants, and it remains one of my dining goals in life. This is the first time I've read one of his cook books, but I'd heard that this one was especially geared to the home cook. It is amazing. At first I was put off by the gargantuan size, but then was thankful for every page and every inch. It's lovely, instructional, inspirational." (read more)

Horns
by Joe Hill

Tammy's Comments:
"The title of Joe Hill's second novel encapsulates the problem facing its main character -- Horns....The novel holds more than well-drawn characters. Hill writes exciting action sequences that send the reader along with Ig on his journeys down the Evel Knievel trail. It is all too easy to immerse yourself into the novel...and devour the book in one sitting....Horns is an enjoyable read that leaves you anxious for another book from Hill." (read more)

Kimberly's Comments:
"This is an AMAZINGLY written novel. Loved it. Note to readers: whenever Mantel uses the pronouns "him" or "he" she invariably is referring to Cromwell. Some people find it confusing to figure out who was speaking, but it didn't bother me in the slightest. The story is told from Cromwell's point of view after all." (read more)
