Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers
by Mary Roach
Charese's Comments:
"One doesn't often associate "corpses" with "laugh-out-loud funny" (at least in non-fiction) but Mary Roach combines the two in this enlightening and strangely delightful book. The subject -- the uses and disposal of dead bodies -- may be the definition of macabre, but Roach treats it with goofy wit and, at the same time, respect." (read more)

This Wicked World
by Richard Lange
Elizabeth's Comments:
"This noir-ish first novel is an unusually well-written piece of genre fiction. I especially enjoyed the author's nuanced approach to characterization; there is dimension even to some of the more ancillary figures in the story....I'd say this is probably the best mystery novel I've read this year, and the author is absolutely going on my watch list." How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking about It
by Patricia Love and Steven Stosny
Barbara's Comments:
"This book absolutely hits the nail on the head! Read it before you start thinking about lawyers, preferably on your honeymoon! If you've been married 30 years like me, it will still help you understand why we behave the way we do, and how to change those old patterns. This book is not about 'changing yourself for him/her' it is about each of us becoming the person we really want to be." (read more)

Pygmy
by Chuck Palahniuk
Cecilia's Comments:
"This book had me from the start; intriguing in the viewpoints of all the characters of the 'American way of life' plus laugh out loud funny....I admit I have not read a Palahniuk book before this one but I'm glad to have picked this as one of his books to read. It is a short book written as a diary and once I started reading it I had a hard time stopping until the end...and a surprise ending it was indeed....Highly recommended." (read more)

A Separate Peace
by John Knowles
Maggie's Comments:
"A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, evolves as a tragic story that can occur unpredictably in a boy's life. Gene and Phineas are best friends who stick by each other no matter what. However, as World War I continues on, the war becomes a part of their lives, turning them against each other and then uniting them once again. The book serves as a reminder that one tends to hurt those closest to him, like Gene does to Phineas. For this reason, I will not forget about A Separate Peace." (read more)

The Early Stories: 1953-1975
by John Updike
Judith's Comments:
"I've returned to reading this great author after a few years absence and I realize what a loss we suffered in his recent death. These early stories are brilliant, delightful and every other superlative one could think of about an American literary giant. I am simply awe-struck by his ability to turn the everyday into such shining jewels. You are much missed, Mr. Updike." (read more)

The Glass Room
by Simon Mawer
L George's Comments:
"This is a good read. The sentence structure, cadence and pace are natural, leaving the reader without distraction and free to concentrate on the well developed story. It takes place in Pre WWII Eastern Europe, principally in Czechoslovakia and Austria, in an upper-middle class Jewish/Gentile marriage wherein the development and impact of the Third Reich are dramatised. I liked reading about the third Reich without dwelling on detailed descriptions of the atrocities that send one to bed in despair.
Speaking of bed, the story is not devoid of lust, also not with anatomical detail, but in a natural way.
Modern architecture is a main element of the context, and I learned a lot. The house itself is the only thing in the story that isn't fiction.
The end, as the story, was satisfying - I was loathe to put it down." (read more)

She's My Dad
by Iolanthe Woulff
Chris's Comments:
"Woulff has written nothing short of the most amazing GLBT novel this reviewer has read....The plot is flawless and intriguing. The characters are engaging and very real. The social issues addressed range from homophobia to lesbian bias and right through to transgendered prejudice....This [book] is point-on about issues being dealt with on a national level but, also, on a local level as well with a passionate intensity." Bitter Is the New Black: Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry a Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office
by Jen Lancaster
Jason's Comments:
"How could you NOT want to read this book?...[B]efore we get started, to the male readers out there, no worries, you will likely enjoy this. Jen Lancaster is like the sarcastic best friend you had in high-school...she would be the friend that drank you under the table, mocked you, stole the bacon from your burger, and in the end, you were pleased to let her do it all....[T]his is NOT a chick book, it is a golden humorous godsend.... [F]antastic work all the way around. Love the cover art (on all her books), format is spot on. Keep up the good job and give the person who finalized the layout a big fat raise." (read more)

Lean on Pete (P.S.)
by Willy Vlautin
Richard's Comments:
"Lean on Pete was recommended in a book review on Powell's website....I thought at first it read a little like The Art of Racing in the Rain, but as I read more I soon learned I was wrong, it's nothing like any book I've read.... the story gets harder and harder to read, but read you will, because you won't believe what Charlie and a horse called Lean on Pete go through to find safety and happiness. This story will drag you along until you either get sick or start crying your eyes out. Either way you will finish this story....Love it or hate it...you'll think about it for along time." Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer
by Novella Carpenter
Spike's Comments:
"We first found Novella via an article in the NY Times, about a rabbit butchery class that she held in Brooklyn....Her compassion, humor, pragmatism, and thoughtful musings about her urban farm efforts are a delight to read, and so completely relevant to anyone who is attempting to better understand our place on the food chain. And the of joy and pleasure that food can offer -- raising, growing, eating, sharing -- is certainly not lost on her, but truly enhanced by understanding where it all comes from." (read more)

In the Shadow of the Cypress
by Thomas Steinbeck
Cinnamon's Comments:
"In the Shadow of the Cypress by Thomas Steinbeck was certainly an interesting read....readers are taken through a whirlwind of events that leave the mind excited and energized....If there is one thing I can say about Mr. Steinbeck's writing, it's that he really does seem to have a way of instilling life into this book....[I]t's like this story woke me up and made me want to learn more. Perhaps that was Mr. Steinbeck's purpose; perhaps he just wanted to write a really good piece of fiction. Either way, I think he accomplished his goals....Fully capturing the mind, I think I can guarantee that this story will provide a great escape." (read more)

If you love multi-generational sagas full of mysteries and secrets that mold people and the lives they live, you will love this. The Stolen Child: A Novel
by Keith Donohue
Scot's Comments:
"I picked the book up recently and began reading it with some skepticism. By the end of the first few paragraphs, I fell in, became engrossed...until I finally finished reading, closed the book, looked up, and realized that I'd finished it in a matter of hours. I'm a slow reader, but I flew through The Stolen Child....Donohue's writing is lovely, sweetened by a kind heart and bright imagination....The story drips with grief over the cruelty of humankind and of the damaging affects of ego on ourselves, the people around us, and the world we live in....It's heartbreaking, but it ends on the dearest, purest note. All of the sadness is not for nothing. Hang in there and give it a read." (read more)

Carole's Comments:
"I don't usually pick up books classified as "thrillers" but after discovering "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" I HAD to run out and get "The Girl Who Played with Fire." Larsson does an amazing job of twisting and turning the plot--every time I thought I had figured something out, I was wrong. Larsson is a fantastic storyteller and his complex characters keep you turning the page." (read more)

How to Paint a Dead Man (P.S.)
by Sarah Hall
Elizabeth's Comments:
""How to Paint a Dead Man" was amazing on so many levels. Sarah Hall skillfully connects disparate characters across continents and times, using her handle on point of view as the breadcrumbs that keep the reader from getting lost. I'm still amazed at how easily she brings you into a scene, as if you are not reading a description but looking around yourself only find you've fallen into present-day London or post World War II Italy. Her tale of loss and death, and the way humans cope with those life moments, was one of the best books of 2009, of the decade and, quite possibly, of my life as a reader." (read more)

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
by Ishmael Beah
Jon's Comments:
"A harrowing read that carries the reader deep into the worst aspects of humanity, challenging the limits of cruelty and the lows to which we will stoop to serve our self interests. In the end, however, the story is inspiring. One is led to the understanding that as great as our capacity for cruelty is our ability to change and to express compassion. If we can be this bad and still come back, how good could we be if we just gave ourselves the chance?" (read more)
