The Insufficiency of Maps
The Insufficiency of Maps
by Nora Pierce

Kerry's Comments:
"This is an excellent, beautifully written book. Anyone who is a foster parent, is thinking about becoming a foster parent, or works with foster or adopted children should read this book. It tells the story through the child's eyes. Truly, our children all have threads linking them to their past, culture and heritage....As I read this book, I could not help but think of the children I have fostered. I so hope I gave them the tools they need to stay linked to the thread that gives them roots." (read more)

On Chesil Beach
On Chesil Beach
by Ian McEwan

Mary's Comments:
"McEwan's writing is exquisite. In this case, exquisitely painful, as we wait page after page for the consummation of this marriage. Memories of one's personal awkwardness when entering the sexual realm are inevitable. This book might serve as a call for abstinence with our teenagers, just so they don't have to go through what these people endured." (read more)

Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2)
Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2)
by Suzanne Collins

Trish's Comments:
"Amazing book! Used Hunger Games in newly created literature circles with my language arts classes and we all became instant fans of the series. This, the second in the trilogy, is as tantalizing and action-packed as the first. In the form of the best writers, Collins created interesting twists and surprise events to keep the reader on his/her toes and hanging on the edge of their seats. I would recommend this book to EVERYONE! It is one of the best books I have ever read, and it helped to awaken the reader in my most stubborn non-readers. I love it and can't wait for Mockingjay!" The Angel's Game
by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Sandra's Comments:
"Like Shadow of the Wind, The Angel's Game is a darkly atmospheric novel full of good and evil. I love how Ruiz Zafon's story makes my brain work. Who is good and who is evil? Is David, the protaganist, an innocent vicitm or is his life falling apart because of his own ego and obsessions? The supernatural undertones add so many more "what ifs?" .... I am always so thankful for a book that really makes me think and leaves me with a sense of wonder." (read more)

Howl's Moving Castle
by Diana Wynne Jones

Eden's Comments:
"I first discovered Howl's Moving Castle in May of 2009 after watching the movie. I had never heard of Diana Wynne Jones before. But after seeing the movie I was eager to read the book. I think it took me four days to read and I enjoyed every single moment of it. Those four days I couldn't wait to wake up and read more of Sophie's adventure....After reading Howl's Moving Castle I began to want to write again. I used to write stories when I was younger. But, just stopped one day. Diana Wynne Jones inspired me to write again. And now I'm writing my own fantasy book trilogy....Howl's Moving Castle is a wonderful, funny story with great characters. I highly recommend this book, to anyone and everyone." (read more)

by Kenneth Sewell and Clint Richmond

Charles's Comments:
"An intriguing read, best accompanied by Scorpion Down and Blind Man's Bluff for a trilogy on Cold War submarine operations. The story of US deception and Howard Hughes' Glomar Explorer/Challenger ships being involved was fascinating since I lived on Oahu during that time, and recall the newspaper stories on the presence of such a hard-to-ignore large ship in the area." Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls
by Steve Hockensmith

Michelle's Comments:
"This book begins four years before [Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls] as Elizabeth is ready to come out into society, but low and behold even those long dead can't resist a good party! Reading Steve Hockensmith's prose almost made me wonder if Jane Austin herself hasn't risen from the grave as well, because down to Mrs. Bennet's last "La" it sounds downright Austin. ....Humor is not lacking as we learn how the dreadfuls return to the English countryside, and we set the scene for [Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls]....I highly recommend this book. If you like Austin, and like fun -- you'll enjoy this book too!" (read more)

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1)
The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games #1)
by Suzanne Collins

Alisha's Comments:
"To express my affection for this brilliant novel, would be to write a novel in it self. I was blown away by Suzanne Collins ability to take my emotions and trigger them whenever she felt was neccessary. I frequently felt compassion for the main character, Katniss Everdeen. Katniss is a 16 year old girl whose only wish is for her family to survive, after the death of her father she turns into the primary caregiver. She is such a strong willed and fierce personality. The reason I can connect so well to Katniss is due to Suzanne Collins' amazing technique to open her up throughout the novel. We find out that the end of The Hunger Games brings more trouble than ever thought before the novel even began." (read more)

Within this story a man reflects on how his whole outlook on life was affected after a three week encounter with a burn victim when he was in seventh grade. Honest dialogue, nothing is sugar coated here, which is what kids crave, honesty and how to handle real life, difficult situations while "saving" face among their peers. Elizabeth's Comments:
"This is an interesting twist on the "abducted woman" theme; it is told in the form of the survivor's reluctant sessions with a therapist. So you start off knowing that she escaped. What intrigued me most was the author's skill at evoking complex emotions by using only a few words, or some simple imagery...I found this book much more moving than I had expected. In Pursuit of Silence: Listening for Meaning in a World of Noise
by George Prochnik

Bevan's Comments:
"This is as important a topic as any. Noise damages us physically, and eventually diminishes our humanity. We slowly lose the ability to hear detail and nuance in music, language, and nature. On top of that we are losing our attention span, due mostly to the endless penny arcade of those shouting and babbling in mass media....Is that all there is to human existence?....It might be good to follow the author's advice to create more places in public life for silence, for instance: Banning leaf blowers, changing our modes of transportation and construction, thinking about the damage sound amplification does...and other actions might be a good start." The Language of Bees: A Novel of Suspense Featuring Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes
by Laurie R. King

Anne's Comments:
"Very quickly upon their return to Surrey, to their home between cases, Mary Russell is plunged into the mysterious abandonment of one of Holmes' prized bee hives, while Holmes is propelled into the back streets and brothels of London. Are the two separate investigations related? Once again, author Laurie R. King sets the two -- a scholar and the sleuth -- upon an edge-of-the seat, forward leaning adventure, with fresh connection to an old tale of the Conan Doyle corpus. The lines of connection are taut as this most heart-wrenching and mentally challenging tale plays out across the globe in the uneasy space between two world wars." (read more)

Ship Breaker
by Paolo Bacigalupi

Nicole's Comments:
"Meet Nailer, a wiry teenager who works the light crew. It's his job to crawl through the dangerous ducts and narrow passages of abandoned tanker ships to scavenge copper wire that his crew can then strip and sell. He's lucky, he has a job and a crew but as soon as he gets too big for the ducts, he'll get stripped of his crew tats and left to fend for himself on the beaches....Bacigalupi does an amazing job developing this dystopian world in which the polar ice caps have long since melted away, swamping the coastal regions leaving entire cities under water. Oil is still a commodity, but hard to come by, even though it pollutes the water. His characters are equally well developed and tragic, and we find ourselves struggling right along with them as the story line twists and turns....This is a dark young adult novel that challenges the definition of family and questions moral issues surrounding survival. What would you be willing to sacrifice in order to survive or make a better life for yourself?" (read more)
