Drood
Drood
by Dan Simmons

Manek's Comments:
"Loved this book. It's long and filled with digressions, but they're all fascinating. The characters are engaging and interesting, especially Wilkie Collins (who narrates the book). Makes me want to read The Woman in White (and maybe even some of his other works)." (read more)

City of Bones: Mortal Instruments #1
City of Bones: Mortal Instruments #1
by Cassandra Clare

Mariah's Comments:
"Sometimes when you've read too many fantasy books jammed packed with goblins, demon's and angels you really get sick of it. But don't give up yet! Cassandra Clare has created a dazzling book that leaves you breathless with excitement. Moments where you urge Clary on, want to slap Jace's face or give Simon a big hug are moments where you realize how great this book is." (read more)

The Shadow of the Wind
The Shadow of the Wind
by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Anna's Comments:
"I fell across The Shadow of the Wind in the same manner that Daniel came onto it. A maze of twists and turns, while 10 year old Daniel starts a journey in search of an illusive writer, who seems to have vanished off the face of the earth, along with his collection of books. Carlos Ruiz Zafon's writing is excellent and pulls you further into the dangerous world of Barcelona's darker side and secrets best left alone." (read more)

Hungry Ghosts: Mao's Secret Famine
by Jasper Becker

Juanita's Comments:
"This book is wonderful - When I was in high school here in the U.S., millions of Chinese citizens were simultaneously starving to death in China. It is the definitive book, in my opinion, on the hunger and deaths of millions of Chinese people in the mid-20th century suffered because of Mao and his sickening government policies." (read more)

Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir
Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir
by Dave Mustaine

Dave's Comments:
"I have always enjoyed the music of Megadeth and admired Mr. Mustaine's intelligence. After reading his autobiography, I admire him even more. Candid, confessional and downright fascinating, Mustaine recalls his life and struggles in so much detail it's sort of a minor miracle he's even alive to tell it. Great read, one I'd suggest to both metal and non-metal fans." (read more)

Get-It-Done Guy's 9 Steps to Work Less and Do More
by Stever Robbins

Rebecca's Comments:
"I am consistently looking for ways to be efficient. I love streamlining and do it in my sleep, on vacation, and other times when I am supposed to be relaxing. So I really got a lot from Stever's book. I like efficiency for the sake of being efficient. It never dawned on me to be efficient so I could have a LIFE!! Madness, I tell you. There were several tips in the book that I already was practicing: that affirmation alone was worth the price of admission....I recommend this book to anyone who wants to go from living to work to working to live." The Tenth Gift
by Jane Johnson

Rebecca's Comments:
"What a magnificent book. I have traveled from Cornwall to Morocco, from the present day to 1625 and found love, hate, religious zeal, pirates, puritans, Muslims and Christians. This is a fascinating tale of parallel lives of two different times and lives connected by history and passion. It starts out slow, but hang in there. The ride is well worth it." (read more)

Russian Winter
by Daphne Kalotay

Candace's Comments:
"Russian Winter by Daphne Kalotay is a beautifully written novel about the Soviet Union after the war, the Bolshoi Ballet, defection to the West, a jewelry collection, a foreign language professor, an auction house employee, and the mysterious connections among all.... Kalotay's prose should be savored, allowing the complex story to slowly unfold. Russian Winter will appeal to fans of historical fiction with a bit of mystery and to anyone interested in Russia, the ballet, and jewelry. In many ways, I feel as if this novel had been written just for me." (read more)

The Thirteenth Tale: A Novel
by Diane Setterfield

Megan's Comments:
"Excellent book! It took me a while to get through this book as life got in the way of my reading :) However, this story was unique and beautiful.... I was drawn to this book because of the cover art... the idea of a mysterious biography, the promise of ghosts (which the story isn't nearly as *ghostly* as one would think from the back cover) and reviews by others. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good fictional story, especially historical fiction." (read more)

Room
by Emma Donoghue

Shauna's Comments:
"I read Room in one day -- I just couldn't put it down! Now I'm sorry that I finished it so quickly... Jack is a compelling character, and Donoghue brings him to life on the page through his use of language, his humanization of the objects in his ordered life, and his spirit. The subject matter may be bleak, but the novel itself is not depressing....I've never posted a review before, but this book is special so I'm encouraging people to spend some time in Room." "Matterhorn effectively establishes that war is an essential human enterprise, a complex and contradictory cultural thing. Marlantes describes the tedium, humanity, craftsmanship, horror, and glory of combat convincingly. Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck
by Erik Larson

Annette's Comments:
"After reading Devil in the White City, I was thrilled to find Erik Larson's Thunderstruck. By connecting seemingly unrelated individuals, Larson illustrates, through his gift for storytelling, that the world really is a smaller place and maybe we aren't so separate as we think. What I love about Larson's books is that I learn so much history as I am reading -- in a way as to be entertained as well as informed....If you are looking for action, adventure, mystery, romance, AND reality, this is a great choice." Jane's Comments:
"I've never been a good cook, I can follow recipes okay but it usually takes me a few pathetically failed attempts to get it right. I took a gamble on this book though because a co-worker made the root beer cake; it was so good I had to have it and I needed to bring a dessert for a family get together. I also made the root beer cake and it turned out really well -- my first time! I love how easy the instructions are, how unique and tasty sounding the recipes are and the drool worthy photos." Jennifer's Comments:
"I absolutely LOVED this book. It was such a heart-wrenching story. From the very beginning I was wishing for those girls to get out of there....The writing was beautiful, not in a poetic kind of way, but in that it was so simple, yet so compelling. Even though what happens in the story is hard to read I didn't want to put it down. There's a certain finesse to this book that makes it hard to put down (even when you have homework or sleep to get to)....Such a compelling and heart-wrenching tale. I was hooked right from the beginning!" (read more)

The Unnamed
The Unnamed
by Joshua Ferris

Chris's Comments:
"This is a powerful book. It's a very well written tale of a man suffering from a compulsion or unnamed medical condition that causes him to walk without warning. What a premise! Reading this story of how his condition disrupts his life, tears apart everything he has built, takes away everything he has and watching his battle to retain his humanity is a harrowing experience....The section detailing Tim's break with reality was rather difficult to parse, but overall this book was a great read that I would recommend to most everyone." The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby (Penguin Classics)
by Charles Kingsley

Katie's Comments:
"This is one of the strangest, most delightful little stories you will ever read! Like a literary version of a Victorian "cabinet of curiosities," the story is full of oddities and surprises and characters that are not easily forgotten. It will leave you scratching your head, to be sure...and make Alice in Wonderland seem tame by comparison! I couldn't put it down. Sphere
by Michael Crichton

Nitsan's Comments:
"This book was recommended to me by friends and family, and being a fan of Jurassic Park, I had to try it, and I wasn't disappointed. Suspenseful, mysterious, and deep, Sphere really explores the human psych, while giving sci-fi fans something to enjoy as well. The characters each have their own story, yet nothing is more mysterious than the alien sphere they find inside of a ship in the ocean. The book has great questions to puzzle anyone, without becoming strictly science fiction. Definitely recommended." (read more)

In fact, even though I'm a very fast reader and can read a novel in an afternoon (when there's nothing else that must be done), I did not want to finish the book. Moo, Baa, La La La!
by Sandra Boynton

Dena's Comments:
"This has been one of our daughter's top 3 books for the past 2 months. (She's 5 months old now.) She instantly lights up whenever she sees someone holding Moo, Baa, La La La. The animal sounds crack her up. There must be something special about the illustrations as well, since simply reciting the book, when it's not handy, doesn't get us the same reaction. When reading this book to her at a family gathering, we found that Moo, Baa, La La La is a book that's not easily forgotten (in a good way). A cousin helped us "read" the book from across the room. Apparently, it had been a favorite in their house as well -- 17 years ago." (read more)

The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival
by John Vaillant

Egon's Comments:
"What a great book ! I just finished reading The Tiger and I just couldn't put it down. John Vaillant has insight which is quite rare. The research he has done, and the way he approaches the subject is really quite unique and perceptive....I also liked his acknowledgment of Native tradition and understanding of the mystery surrounding Tigers who would recognize any Hunter who in fact has at sometime in the past killed one of their own. This book is no simple hunting tale, it covers Siberian History and feeds you with everything related to the circumstances that took place in the Primorye Territory in the late 1990's to bring about this deliberate monstrous act. Well done John, it's worth reading again and then lending it to my Hunting buddies in Northern B.C." (read more)

Agnes and the Hitman
by Jennifer Crusie

Lucinda's Comments:
"I don't even like books that fall under the category of "chick-lit" but this was one of the best books I've read in a long time. It's an easy fun escapist jaunt. But fun doesn't even capture it. Laugh out loud on the bus funny covers it. Agnes is a cranky chef trying to cater a southern mob wedding (with more than the usual secrets), when someone tries to dognap her Rhett, and a hitman climbs in her bedroom window to protect her. Chaos runs rampant but instead of being confusing or disjointed you just keep laughing and turning the pages. This is what happens when a romance writer and a green beret write books together." The Historian: A Novel
The Historian: A Novel
by Elizabeth Kostova

Rebekah's Comments:
"After reading this book, I felt inspired to read lots of history, about Eastern Europe and Turkey in particular. That effect is nifty considering Kostova's romantic view of the historian's discipline. Yes, the book deals with vampires. Also, the plot spans many countries, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives on the value of history in modern life. Not only did this novel treat me to a page-turning, dark, vampire adventure, it also, secretly, taught a real philosophy of history." (read more)
