The Red Book
The Red Book
by Carl Gustav Jung

Brian's Comments:
"At long last, we get to look deeply into Carl Jung's exploration of the unconscious.... [N]ow we can all read and see just what that period of Jung's life was about in full detail and with illustrations of his inner visions. We are so very fortunate to now have this documented and published in as close to his original hand, mind, and vision as possible. The Red Book is by far the greatest gift students of Jung, artists, psychologists, counselors, or seekers of self knowledge can now receive. I could spend months with this book as a catalyst for self exploration, seeking the intersection of my creativity and my spirituality. A Masterpiece in publishing." (read more)

The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer
by Siddhartha Mukherjee

Janice's Comments:
"Could not put this book down and am finding that I can't help talking about it to my friends. My husband gave it to me for Christmas and I can't wait for him to read it too. I learned so much about not just our war on cancer, but on our war against illnesses in general. Written in an erudite and moving fashion, the science was illuminating and accessible. The story of cancer's journey and our interactions with this disease through time, allowed me to reflect on the shaping of our society through this lens. I would dare anyone to not be moved by this story." (read more)

Bloodthirsty
Bloodthirsty
by Flynn Meaney

Teri's Comments:
"OH my gosh, this book was hilarious and great. In a lighthearted style we read about a boy who realizes that the best way to deal with a skin condition and a fair complected is to become a vampire. To become a vampire you must: act like you do not car, be dark and brooding, rarely be seen eating, queasy seeing blood at school, and dislike the sunshine. With a whole host of vampire genre books out there this one rocked my socks because it was so great. Being a teen is hard enough and sometimes we try and do things to hang in there and just survive those years. This is a tale somewhat about that, with a lot of good fun in there also." (read more)

The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine
The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine
by Michael Lewis

Roger's Comments:
"This is an extremely entertaining and sometimes even hilarious book, and yet, in the end, it's sobering. Depressing, even. The book is the story of the subprime mortgage debacle told from the point of view some of the very few people who saw it coming. The interesting thing about these people is they all seem to be people who are compulsively honest, virtually incapable of lying, whereas the far larger number of people who participated eagerly in the debacle were so in the habit of lying that they lied to themselves, and believed it. The most depressing aspect of the book is that, after the collapse, virtually all of the guilty parties kept their ill-gotten gains, and their jobs, and are yet again collecting obscene bonuses on Wall Street." Fall of Giants
by Ken Follett

Linda's Comments:
"Sweeping saga of the first quarter (or so) of the 20th Century. The story was so compelling that I zoomed through the 800 pages, even though I knew the outcome of women's suffrage, World War I, the Russian Revolution, and the Great Depression. The story is neatly tied together with memorable characters and nice historical details. This book has very broad appeal and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a book with a good, intricate plot." (read more)

"This book is one of the best-written works of fiction I've read in a long time. At Large and at Small: Familiar Essays
by Anne Fadiman

Melanie's Comments:
"Anne Fadiman writes wonderful essays. At Large and At Small is a collection with a wider range of topics than the previous one I read, Ex Libris. While Ex Libris dealt mainly with topics reading related, At Large and At Small covers ice cream, collecting, moving out of the city, patriotism and others. Fadiman has a way of making you completely present at the events she writes of, as well as making you recall similar events in your own life. She obviously has a great love of literature." The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Kermit's Comments:
"Absolutely absorbing. This account of social and personal tragedy tied to a medical miracle is one of the most fascinating tales I've ever read. Tactfully and honestly reconstructed by the author, the book touches on almost every aspect and implication of the astounding events surrounding the life, death, and afterlife of Henrietta Lacks. Most importantly, it encourages further thought and research while remaining an entirely satisfying read. Highly, highly recommended." (read more)

The Deep Blue Good-by
The Deep Blue Good-by
by John D. MacDonald

RD's Comments:
"I stumbled upon John D. MacDonald's Travis McGee series by accident, and it's turned out to be one of my greatest stumbles of all time. MacDonald wrote detective novels like dime-store screenwriters write horrid television series, except MacDonald's novels are eminently readable and entertaining. McGee is the kind of cynical anti-hero that has paved the way for unapologetic "do-badders" such as Hannibal Lecter and Dexter. The Deep Blue Good-By is the first in the McGee series, and I've already read all but four of the rest of the series." (read more)

Lips Touch Three Times
by Laini Taylor

Melody's Comments:
"*blinks curiously, wondering how she could possibly be back in this quotidian setting after the intensity of the world she was just in* ... Yeah, it's one of those books. I read more than half of it at Powell's yesterday, having become oblivious to any other book after picking it up. Then I read half the night, and slept tangled in dreams that left shivery footprints which evaporated when I opened my eyes to see where the blood was. I finished it this morning while my coffee cooled on the nightstand, unheeded. And I'm not all the way back yet because I'm sure that somewhere behind me, somewhere very near there's something not quite safe. And I like it.... Lovely prose, bewitching fairy-tales, beautiful illustrations. One for the permanent collection." (read more)

Boneshaker
Boneshaker
by Cherie Priest

Hafoc's Comments:
"I bought this book for the pleasure of reading about an alternative Seattle. I was rewarded with a fantastic read! I have not enjoyed a new book from a USA author in years. Cherie's characters quickly come alive in her 1860 Seattle. She created an adventure that travels (and in a few areas rearranges) popular 2009 neighborhoods still around from the 1800s. Most enjoyable are her characters that capture that odd, unique Seattle attitude. ...I would also like to compliment the cover artist Jon Foster and Cover designer Jamie Stafford-Hill. Yes a cover does not make the book good, but an excellent cover on a great book creates a complete package!" (read more)

Ben's Comments:
"This is the first book I received after deciding that I should try an Indiespensable subscription. If The Instructions is any indication of the quality of books picked for Indiespensable, I will probably have to be subscribed for the rest of my life. I began reading this book over my Christmas Break and stayed up well past a reasonable time to go to sleep every night until I was finished. The Instructions just gets into your head and stays. "Even though this is an older book, I reread it this year and it's always good! The twist on Wizard of Oz is fantastic! I really am more sympathetic to the Witch and her story. A Girl Named Zippy: Growing Up Small in Mooreland, Indiana
by Haven Kimmel

Colleen's Comments:
"A Girl Named Zippy was such a joy to read and felt truly original to me. Here's to writing an excellent book that isn't about a traumatic or disturbing story line. It was an amazing read because Haven Kimmel writes in the voice of a kid mind. I mean, it's the first book that ever resonated with my mostly forgotten childhood memory -- as if I had experienced her experiences and had thought her thoughts. And to top it off, I laughed out loud many times. So glad I read this book." (read more)

The City and the City
The City and the City
by China Mieville

Kevin's Comments:
"China Mieville has a tendency toward the baroque, but in The City and The City, he dials his style all the way back to sparse, and it works brilliantly. The story of a detective investigating a murder that takes place in one of two intertwined cities, it expands outward to encompass the history of the cities, and hints at the underlying secrets around and between them. And this is the genius of the novel, that although the plot progresses in a fairly straightforward fashion, the stories of The City and The City proceed in hints and interstices. The stylistic restraint suits Mr. Mieville very well." (read more)

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand

"The best fiction creates a world and invites us into it. This book takes us into an English village -- not a BBC stereotype, but an actual place. Great House
Great House
by Nicole Krauss

M's Comments:
"This book is written so well and has captured me so completely that I have to walk away from it; I have to make breakfast, write in my journal, compose letters to friends in between the sentences I am reading. It's too intimate, like being with a lover for the first time who lets you in further than her body, further than how her best friends know her, and further than you can open to in that moment despite the fact that you can't do anything but stay as present as you are capable. Interior monologue rendered exquisitely, each word a treasure, and yet as you lift one from the tangle of a paragraph, its singular beauty is part of a larger beauty that, even with panoramic vision, you cannot fully take in. I could read it over and over and feel like I've only scratched the surface. The story is like a mobius strip, tangling and untangling itself, all the while taking you deeper into the story and into yourself. And yet whether I have stepped away into the kitchen to make breakfast or at my desk composing a letter to a friend, the story stays with me, it won't let go, and I don't want it to, I just want to step back far enough to see what I see, feel what I feel without being swallowed up by the whale of words that I am pursuing like Ahab." Apparition and Late Fictions: A Novella and Stories
by Thomas Lynch

Patty's Comments:
"I think Lynch is an excellent author. His essays are remarkable -- I didn't think that I would ever want to read a book by an undertaker, but Lynch convinced me to do so. So I was looking forward to these short stories. They did not disappoint. The first story, "Catch and Release" moved so smoothly -- like the river that the speaker is visiting that I had to catch my breath at the end. The other story that stuck with me was "Matinee de Septembre". The main character was mesmerizing. One review referred to Stendhal syndrome when speaking of this story. A new concept to me, but it does help to define the story in my mind. I hope that Lynch writes more fiction, soon." (read more)
