Open and Shut
Open and Shut
by David Rosenfelt

Cliff's Comments:
"Open and Shut had me laughing hard. I like to read at coffee shops some times. Big mistake bringing this book along. Every couple of minutes I was barking out loud and everyone was looking at me like I was a mad man. Rosenfelt, an author I had never read before, has a true gem here with Open and Shut. He plots a good traditional mystery around some first rate characters and a wit a mile long....If you want a simple easy to read genre tale that feels like it stepped out of the 1980's, this one is for you." The Glass Room
by Simon Mawer

Nancy's Comments:
"This a story of an unusual house and those who inhabit it. Mawer's writing pulls the reader into a sensual and sophisticated world which begins just prior to the start of WW II. His characters are captivating and the tale is gripping. I found this book hard to put down." (read more)

Chasing the Moon
Chasing the Moon
by A. Lee Martinez

Robert's Comments:
"I've generally enjoy A. Lee Martinez's works; I thought he fell short with his last novel, but happily this one brings us back on track. Elder gods, werewolves, elder but not so powerful gods, insanity, and overall a good time. The comedy which makes his works enjoyable is still there, and the main character is his normal regular person who gets thrown into some haphazard situation but comes out on top. Overall a good read, plenty of fun, enough action and there really aren't any slow points." (read more)

A Home at the End of the World
A Home at the End of the World
by Michael Cunningham

Sofia's Comments:
"This is one of my favorite books -- a hard thing to say, considering I kind of feel like I'm being a horrible mother and choosing a favorite kid when it comes to choosing a favorite book -- but from the very first sentence, this book gripped me. It's a very character-driven book, a book in which you feel you get to know the protagonists, but at the same time, they remain entirely their own, they're never transparent... they're people. There's also something so tremendously beautiful about the language he uses which makes this book a pleasure to read. It's thoughtful and sad and just gorgeous -- I highly, highly recommend it." Something Wicked This Way Comes
by Ray Bradbury

Melanie's Comments:
"The perfect novel for the beginning of October as the weather cools and Halloween approaches. I've loved this book since childhood and as I've grown up, the affection is still there. Spooky, charming, and a perfect taste of a distantly Gothic othertime in the American Midwest. I always hear the dirge in train whistles at night. Thank you, Ray Bradbury." (read more)

The World According to Garp
The World According to Garp
by John Irving

Heather's Comments:
"The World According to Garp -- first published in 1978 and the book for which John Irving won a National Book Award in 1980 -- now holds a spot on my list of favorite books, and Irving is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. He is an incredible storyteller; in my opinion, one of the best. Speaking through Garp, Irving says, "...a writer's job is to imagine everything so personally that the fiction is as vivid as our personal memories." Irving has definitely accomplished that with The World According to Garp....This is one sensational story." (read more)

When She Woke
When She Woke
by Hillary Jordan

Mindy's Comments:
"It takes a special book to hook me into reading it in one sitting. Maybe it's the timeliness to the current political and faith debate, maybe it's my affinity for The Scarlet Letter, or maybe Hillary Jordan is just that damn good. Whatever the maybe, this book grabs you and drops you into a completely realized world that is both terrifying and familiar. If you like books like The Handmaid's Tale, or The Scarlet Letter, or even the more current and YA focused The Hunger Games, this book is sure to grab your interest. In fact while the prose is sometimes thick yet beautiful, the protagonist, Hannah is so sheltered that she almost reads as a YA character, despite her being 26 at the start of the novel." The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark
by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan

Adam's Comments:
"An exceptional read in Sagan's easily accessible style, The Demon-Haunted World is the late planetologist's effort to fight superstitious and unscientific views cast on scientific topics, as well as a call for reform in education and thinking. An amazingly interesting advocacy of skepticism, practically unputdownable!" (read more)

The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean
The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean
by Susan Casey

Thomas's Comments:
"Interesting and often downright riveting, The Wave is the story of the ocean's giant and rogue waves -- and the people who try to surf them. Half the book focuses on the science of giant waves and their effects on coastal communities and shipping; the other half follows big wave surfing's best-known names as they traverse the globe in search of giant waves to surf -- including the mythical 100' monster....It's a wholly worthwhile, very interesting read (even though I'll never go near the ocean again...)." Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings
by Christopher Moore

Nancy's Comments:
"Each one of Christopher Moore's books that I have had the pleasure of reading, Fluke being the latest, is funny, poignant and full of strong, intelligent women and sweet, funny and vulnerable men. Fluke is packed with weird and wonderful surprises that make it difficult to put down, leaving one wanting to know how Moore ever came up with such a crazy idea....I laughed out loud, embarrassed on the bus, read as fast as I could before the next stop and gasped and wondered at the originality of this great tale." The Constant Princess
The Constant Princess
by Philippa Gregory

Wendi's Comments:
"Phillipa Gregory's books bring to life the rich history of the British throne and aristocracy. The Constant Princess is another one of her forays into the fictional history of another Katherine -- Katherine of Aragon -- the first wife of Henry the VIII. You get the feeling you are there with her through her youth, her marriage to the Throne, her triumphs, and her self preservation as well as that for her daughter. The novel grabs hold of your attention from the beginning, holds your interest throughout, and even though you know the story will end, you wish it could go on." (read more)

The Lonely Polygamist: A Novel
The Lonely Polygamist: A Novel
by Brady Udall

Krista's Comments:
"I wasn't so sure at first that I was going to get into this book, not that the writing didn't engage me, it's just that I wasn't sure I was going to like the characters enough to see if through. That said, soon enough, I couldn't put this book down. The Lonely Polygamist offers a really fascinating glimpse into pluralistic marriage and more than that, is a story about the hardships of life, no matter who you are. It is funny, and sad, and everything I could have asked for. I am looking forward to reading more of Brady Udall." (read more)

Dear Cary: My Life with Cary Grant

Bettina's Comments:
"This was a pleasantly surprising read, in fact I was unable to be parted from it for very long. Let's be honest, most of us would never pick up a bio of Dyan Cannon, but that all changes when Cary Grant is the subject. Given the plentiful multitude of books about Cary and some extraordinary claims that get more outlandish depending on the authors' hellbent needs for scandal, Ms. Cannon's book is very down-to-earth and revealing, without being too revealing." Miss Lonelyhearts / The Day of the Locust
Miss Lonelyhearts / The Day of the Locust
by Nathanael West

Chelsey's Comments:
"This pair of fabulously dark, witty, and concise novellas is a perfect match. Each goes down like a short, strong cocktail with spiked with a perfect bite of bitters. Miss Lonelyhearts is swift, comical, almost loopy at times, yet with prose so tight you could bounce a dime off it. Day of the Locust prowls the fringes of Hollywood, through the many species of desperate wannabe clinging to the edges of the film industry. Two scenes in particular -- one where the main character crosses a film lot through an anachronistic jumble of set pieces, the other the book's astonishing and terrifying final scene -- will stick with me forever. The New Directions edition is well-packaged with a cool zine-like cover and an insightful intro by Jonathan Lethem. Highly recommended." (read more)

The Art of Fielding
The Art of Fielding
by Chad Harbach

Jonathan's Comments:
"The Art of Fielding is much more than a novel about baseball. In fact, two of the most interesting characters are not baseball characters, at all. The brilliance of the novel is that Harbach uses a wholly original story about baseball to explore many other themes -- love, struggle, temptation, redemption. Some of my favorite scenes took place far from the baseball diamond. And yet, if you are more of a sports fan than a literature lover, there is still much to love in Harbach's novel. A great debut!" The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by Rebecca Skloot

Sandra's Comments:
"I found this book fascinating, and hard to put down. The sadness of Lack's short life, the pain her family went through for so many decades, and the difficulty in talking about their beloved relative moved me to tears. The many stories of medicine's secrecy in so many areas during the mid-20th century is sad, but to put a face on this amazing story is commendable of Rebecca Skloot. Although memory is never perfect, what the family recalled was true enough, and the records clear enough, to make this a compelling read." (read more)

The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor
The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor
by Robert Kirkman and Jay Bonansinga

Tim's Comments:
"If you are a fan of The Walking Dead television series, definitely give this a try. It will give some back story into a character they may introduce in season two. If you are a fan of the comic books, you will probably enjoy reading some of the back story of a horrible villain. This is definitely an adult book with adult themes and adult language. Be aware of that when you are going into this. The Walking Dead is not for kids. My guess is if you like the television series you won't be offended by anything in here. If you like an old-fashioned zombie flick, The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor is also right up your alley. The character motivations were inconsistent and the constant change in perspective left the writing jagged and sometimes confusing. I might suggest waiting until all the books are out to read them together so that you're not disappointed when you get to the end of this and it leaves you hanging because it is the first book of a trilogy." Sucks to Be Me: The All-True Confessions of Mina Hamilton, Teen Vampire (Maybe)
by Kimberly Pauley

An's Comments:
"Sucks to be Me by Kimberly Pauley gave us a different approach to the whole vampire craze. Mina, the protagonist, isn't a vampire to start with or the girl who wants to be a vampire/wants to be with a vampire. Instead, she's a normal girl who is forced to choose whether or not she wants to be converted. With Mina, you get a pretty strong female lead in that she knows who she is and isn't afraid of standing up to others. While she suffers from the typical girl problems of a teenager, she finds a way to persevere....I would recommend this book -- easy to get through and entertaining..." (read more)

Already an avid Jones fan, I ached for broken Finley, cheered for misunderstood Beckett, and fell in love with irascible Mrs. Sweeney. Jones traipses across the Atlantic to Ireland for this book and does a masterful job immersing the reader in the culture and cadence of the country. The Visible Man
The Visible Man
by Chuck Klosterman

Tyler's Comments:
"Chuck Klosterman's second foray into fiction shows significant growth from his debut novel Downtown Owl, which I found to be dull, repetitive, and pointless. I've been a fan of Mr. Kolsterman's essays for some time and find his insights into all things pop culture amusing and incisive....For those of you who share my disappointment with Downtown Owl, rest assured. The Visible Man is far better....[T]he book is a strange and wonderful trip with a man (a potential lunatic) who finds that being unseen provides him with an enormous amount of freedom. He shares his story with a somewhat incredulous therapist who wonders why this man has contacted her...and those reasons are later made surprisingly clear....There is a fair amount of genre bending in this novel as well and the results might surprise even Klosterman's most ardent fans....I am pleased that Klosterman chose to focus on a small cast of characters -- mainly the man and his therapist, thereby enhancing the narrative and keeping tightly wound. This book is recommended for those of you who like your fiction fun, and well written. This novel is both." (read more)
