The Cement Garden
The Cement Garden
by Ian McEwan

Nikki's Comments:
"McEwan has only added depth and breadth and more eloquence to his stories and prose, but his acerbic writing style was in full presence even 30 years ago. He's the master of holding his reader to the bitter end.... Cement Garden is the same. The subject matter is shocking and not for the faint of heart: don't gift this to your weakhearted grandma, for instance, nor give it to your putative in-law in a welcome basket. Upon the interesting deaths of their parents, four siblings attempt to maintain residence in their family home, trying to keep up all appearances to all who might be peering. This is the sexual tale not told in Lord of The Flies, if it had been set in the modern, Western world, inside a family home with no parents.... A GREAT READ." (read more)

The Foremost Good Fortune
The Foremost Good Fortune
by Susan Conley

Kat's Comments:
"Susan Conley's memoir is a graceful pilgrimage in the wake of illness and cultural dislocation. Conley's journey as a young mother and her empathy towards her two little boys is a lesson in courage and humility written with humor and style. Most of the story is told in a bewildering China, one that you can smell, taste and feel big time. One can only imagine how Conley pulled it all together when discovering the big C. Reading the chapter "Clouds and Butterflies" clues you in to one of the ways she possibly coped, a chapter containing her little sons drawing, like an amulet, and a sensitive exchange hours before her surgery. Absolutely beautiful!" (read more)

Swan Song
by Robert McCammon

Stephen's Comments:
"Robert McCammon writes with a smooth pen. His artistry for words is magic. Swan Song takes you on a ride through a devastated America. You witness love and hate, man's inhumanity to man. How evil pervades even the most devout. But good has deeper roots. McCammon characterization has you feeling the emotions of both sides. A fantastic read by a masterful raconteur." (read more)

Life of Pi
Life of Pi
by Yann Martel

Nina's Comments:
"This book was amazing. The story is exciting, about survival and a life-or-death situation, but it really is about much more. Pi's views on religion and on life were eye-opening and wonderful. The story pulled me in with its suspense and then its philosophy made me think. The story is filled with metaphor, but also filled with color and life and creativity. I've already read it many times again and again. A good book changes you, and this book changed me." (read more)

East of Eden

"Steinbeck masterfully crafts a story following 2 generations of brothers. Paralleling Cain and Abel, this is an epic novel exploring the greater concepts of fate and free will. Night Train to Lisbon
by Pascal Mercier

Kristine's Comments:
"The characters and settings are captivating. The writing and language are beautiful. I marvel at that beauty all the more to know that I read a translation of the original. It is rare to find a writer who is not afraid to take the time to develop characters and tell a story but Mercier did so. This is one of those books I find myself still thinking about months after I read it and wishing I could read it again for the the first time." (read more)

Neverwhere
Neverwhere
by Neil Gaiman

Michael's Comments:
"Neverwhere is the first, and still a favorite, Neil Gaiman effort I ever experienced. I encountered it many years ago as an audio book. I purchased it at a truck stop in Winnemucca, Nevada out of sheer desperation when facing a long drive north on US 95 -- one of the most desolate and boring roads in America. I knew nothing about the author and was delighted with his dark and gothic alternative underground London. The miles flew by and I found myself listening to it (and reading the novel) again and again over the years.... Years later I find the world he created and the characters still fresh and engaging -- so much so that I just bought a copy as a gift for my 13 year old fantasy junkie niece." (read more)

The Book of Air and Shadows
by Michael Gruber

Andrea's Comments:
"Every Shakespeare fan wishes the historical record were just a little more complete; so many questions, so few answers. Michael Gruber combines a compelling modern mystery story with just enough historical speculation [not too far out but certainly unexpected and thought-provoking; nothing about the second best bed] to appeal to both the Shakespeare fan and the Elizabethan history junkie. Very satisfying." (read more)

Allie's Comments:
"Amazing, inspiring, thought-provoking, and for me personally, life-changing. One of the best examples I can think of regarding what one person is capable of, the difference one individual can make on the world. Expertly written, with some of the best vocab of any book I've read recently. Dense with details, so it isn't a particularly fast read, but is fascinating throughout and certainly worth reading." Andrea's Comments:
"I read this book and highly recommend it not only for its heartfelt words, but for the ways that Greg Mortenson writes of his journeys....the ways he pulls people into helping him. Changes (Dresden Files #12)
by Jim Butcher

Phil's Comments:
"When we read a Harry Dresden novel by Jim Butcher, we know what we're going to get: it won't be the greatest piece of literature in the history of the written word, but it will be an entertaining, enchanting read. Butcher continues to develop his alternate Chicago, and spins a complex and engaging yarn that shows us the family side of Dresden, shows us how far he's willing to go to protect those he loves, and moves most of the major supporting cast around. Warning: the cliffhanger ending will leave you waiting impatiently for the next book in the series." (read more)

McGuffy Ann's Comments:
"This is quite possibly the best book I have ever read. It is haunting and memorable on many levels. My family comes from Tennessee, so perhaps this book means that much more to me. In it, I heard the voices of my own speaking to me. But, I know this novel is far more special. It is hard to believe this is a novel. The layers of this book are thick and tangible, with generations, people, lore and history. Ms. Greene is a very rare and gifted writer. I don't know how she can possibly exceed such writing...but I will be there to read it." (read more)

The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World
The Blue Sweater: Bridging the Gap Between Rich and Poor in an Interconnected World
by Jacqueline Novogratz

Tari's Comments:
"The first thing you learn while reading this story is how interconnected we all are. Jacquelin tells us her own story of learning what the poor in other cultures really need from us -- their sisters and brothers -- and it isn't charity. In her career as an international banker in charge of starting lending programs in Rwanda, Kenya and India, she tried, she failed, she tried again; and with each experience she recounts how much she came to admire the strength of spirit the people of Africa and India had in destitute and sometimes horrific circumstances. For those of us truly interested in learning about social enterprise and what it can do to level the playing field of survival and lifestyle, this book is a must-read." (read more)

Killing Floor
Killing Floor
by Lee Child

Katherine's Comments:
"Nothing is better than finding a new author and a new series. I am now in love with do-it-all, know-it-all, ass-kicking complicated hero, Jack Reacher. Based on a recommendation from a fellow book lover, I picked up Killing Floor by Lee Childs. Being a fan of reading book series in order, I started with this novel as it is the first focusing on ex-military police officer, Reacher.

Aside from introducing us to a new first-class leading man, the story itself is a twisted, clever mystery adventure set in a sleepy small southern town. Included in the suspense is a cast of well crafted supporting characters. A clever, star-crossed romantic angle is the icing on the cake.

If you're a fan of novels driven by strong heroes in the vein of Lucas Davenport and Bobby Lee Swagger, Killing Floor will not disappoint." (read more)

Stranger Things Happen
by Kelly Link

Michael's Comments:
"I'm so glad I listened to all the friends who told me I needed to read this book. Kelly Link shares stories that unfold like dreams, could be classed as urban fantasy or magical realism, but that really just stand apart as a genre unto themselves, leaving the reader without the comfort of the familiar. These stories have stayed in my head long after I actually read the book, creeping back into my conscious thoughts like a memory of an uncertain encounter." (read more)

"This is quite the journey of an everyday struggling writer that gets caught up in the caper of his life. You get the sense with this far fetched story that the barista, your server, even the guy next to you on the train could be the struggling writer. This is a very funny story. Helter Skelter: TheTrue Story Of the Manson Murders

"[T]his extraordinary account of the Tate-LaBianca murder trial is both engrossing and horrifying. The most unsettling aspect is neither Charles Manson's mystique nor the seven brutal slayings; but rather the willful and unflinching savagery of Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, Leslie Van Houten, and Charles "Tex" Watson. I See Your Dream Job: A Career Intuitive Shows You How to Discover What You Were Put on Earth to Do
by Sue Frederick

Siobhan's Comments:
"I found Sue Frederick's newest book to be useful beyond my expectations. Born in New Orleans, the author grew up with a gift for intuition. A professional career counselor, she eventually began using intuition, meditation, and numerology to guide her clients. I was a bit skeptical about the numerology, but in my case, I found the the readings to be quite accurate. Her writing is accessible and enjoyable, as is her use of many personal examples.
