Between the Bridge and the River
by Craig Ferguson
Heidi's Comments:
"Witty, irreverent, yet so incredibly insightful in concise snippets -- it is really an amazing, roller-coaster read that is enjoyable at every twist, turn and head-fall. There are no slow portions and every story within the story is captivating. I recommend it for all adult readers that like to think and 'read' outside the box. It is a book like no other that I can recall." (read more)

Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution
by Sara Marcus
Taylor's Comments:
"I read this book from cover to cover within days of buying it. I didn't expect it to be so entertaining because it's non fiction, but the riot grrrl movement was so well documented that I felt like I was there. I thought I knew a fair amount about this culture until I started this book and learned so much more. Every teenager, girl or boy, should read Girls to the Front." (read more)

The Wilding
by Benjamin Percy
Jeffrey's Comments:
"Benjamin Percy set his first novel, The Wilding, in modern-day central Oregon, where developers turn wilderness into golf resort developments....My take? It's a rumination about the taming of man and nature wrapped in a pretty good adventure story reminiscent of "Deliverence"....The Wilding got me thinking about societal changes over the past couple of generations. Most of us sit with our computers. Except for sports, most men do not confront physical challenges. Kids, like Graham, start thumbing their mobile video games at an early age and many don't bother with sports, anymore....Thinking about that makes me want to end the post and go outside to the land of fragrant junipers, rocky canyons, and cold, rushing rivers depicted so accurately and vividly by Benjamin Percy in The Wilding." Selected by Tom from San Francisco, California

Daughter of Xanadu
by Dori Jones Yang
Tom's Comments:
"The role of females in combat is a debate as timeless as war itself, and one that remains divisive and unresolved to this century. While present-day arguments for and against allowing women in the military revolve around psychological and biological issues, back in olden times, one needed only cite "tradition" and "familial roles" to silence the detractors....Dori Jones Yang, who also penned the best-selling Pour Your Heart Into It: How Starbucks Built a Company One Cup at a Time, is a skilled historian. In researching Daughter of Xanadu, Yang, fluent in Putonghua, traveled all the way to the ruins of Xanadu in remote Inner Mongolia, which this itinerant backpacker can personally attest is no easy journey. The short chapters and brief sentences, edited with razor precision for a younger audience, along with a helpful glossary for ESL students, make reading Daughter of Xanadu a breeze, though adults will admittedly want to beg this book back afterwards from their tweens." The House of Sleep
by Jonathan Coe
Mallory's Comments:
"This is one of my favorite books of all time. A little bit tough to get into, but one you've taken the plunge, it is totally worth it. A very dark sort of comedy with wonderfully outrageous characters. Highly recommend this book for anyone who considers themselves to be a dreamer." (read more)

So Much Pretty
by Cara Hoffman
Diane's Comments:
"Cara Hoffman's debut novel, So Much Pretty, is an extraordinarily smart and beautifully written page turner. This suspenseful and highly charged story is of a young woman, Wendy White, who goes missing in the rural town of Haeden in upstate New York.... Hoffman passionately blends the issue of violence against women that lurks unacknowledged at the dark edges of our culture with a narrative that paints a grim picture of any-town America. Hoffman's literary voice is a force and this novel will leave you reeling." (read more)

The Wind Done Gone
by Alice Randall
Andrea's Comments:
"As a teenager in New Orleans during the very early 60's, I read Margaret Mitchell's Gone With The Wind every summer and was swept away by the romance. As a white teenager in a still segregated city, I really didn't know much about the Civil War except as a reason to sing "Dixie" and yell, "The South Shall Rise Again" at any opportunity.... Many years later I found Alice Randall's The Wind Done Gone and wept for my early teenage naivete. It is both prequel and sequel to GWTW. Cynara, the heroine, is a truly unforgettable character, and her struggles as a child and as a woman are hard, as is the slavery she was born to." (read more)

Just as Long as We're Together
by Judy Blume
Tosha's Comments:
"I'm 31-years-old now, but I read this book when I was in the 4th grade. It was my very first novel, given to me by my teacher (I had made the Principal's Honor Roll and got to choose my prize)....Anyway, I fell in LOVE with this book and was so sad when I finished it...then that's when I learned that there was a whole world of reading and stories available to me AT THE LIBRARY!....[I]t was Ms. Blume who unlocked the door for me. To this day I am an avid reader and bookworm. Here's to my teacher, Ms. Eulalia Powell and to Ms. Judy Blume." (read more)

Infinite Jest: A Novel
by David Foster Wallace
Jennifer's Comments:
"DFW has created a wonder of a novel. So many intertwining stories and themes that it's impossible to speak to them all. He does so many things beautifully in this novel: he casts our foibles into the light, while simultaneously writing with precision and accuracy about addiction and depression. The first chapter, "Year of Glad", is the best and most complete chapter in the entire novel. There is a strong contrast in what the characters are experiencing vs. what the narrator, Hal, and the reader are experiencing. It's nothing short of beautiful. DFW was a true literary genius. Reading his work makes it all the more clear just what the literary world lost when he died." (read more)

Day Hiking Central Cascades (Day Hiking)
by Craig Romano
Elisabeth's Comments:
"I love this whole series. This book is the one that first made me want to hike in the Central Cascade areas. They have color maps of where the hike is located plus a cheat sheet in the front of the main draws of the hike (wildflowers, waterfalls, views etc) which is so helpful on top of in-depth information on the hike and tips for hiking in the area in the front! I would recommend any of the books in the series for anyone wanting to hike in the PNW." (read more)

Lissa's Comments:
"Turow presents the story from the different perspective of most of the characters, drawing out the suspense. Like watching a suspense movie, I wanted to call out to the characters to warn them. Intriguing and difficult to put down, even tho the characters are every day people with their own strengths and vulnerabilities. A great read. Will make a good movie." (read more)

The Sea: A Novel
by John Banville
Susan's Comments:
"Banville has been called the heir to Proust. I am not sure of this. Both write evocatively and with an emotional realism rarely found. The Sea is such a beautiful example of the written word, I know I will want to reread it every now and then to experience the turns of phrase, the poignantly descriptive alliteration. It's like eating a very rich, satisfying meal." (read more)

A Visit from the Goon Squad
by Jennifer Egan
Paula's Comments:
"I am a huge fan of books told in nonstandard ways, and I really enjoyed Jennifer Egan's latest, A Visit from the Goon Squad. The time frame and time span of the stories jumps all over the place -- even into the future 2020 world. The title refers to Time, the inevitable and masterful goon squad, and the disappointments, losses and eventual connections that keep us grounded in the passage of time. I loved the anticipation of each new chapter and figuring out connections between characters and events. In addition, the chapters are told in various narrative perspectives, tones, purposes, styles and even a whole chapter told in PowerPoint presentation, which I felt was very quirky and powerful. I look forward to discussing the book with my Book Club tonight." (read more)

Blood Red Horse
by K M Grant
Kyle's Comments:
"The Blood Red Horse was a fantastic adventure that shows a bond between man and horse can bring happiness to all... [T]his book is chock full of adventure, drama, and romance. It has decent content on the middle ages and I would recommend it for book groups; it brings up many conversations. The Blood Red Horse has some mature content (violence) in the battles, but they show what the experience was like back then. Through out the story you follow a horse named Hosanna, against all odds seems to influence more than even King Richard (that it shows)." (read more)

The Second Duchess
by Elizabeth Loupas
Violet's Comments:
"First and foremost, I must say, "BRAVO!" I absolutely loved this book. Elizabeth Loupas did a brilliant job knitting all of the pieces of this story together, accomplishing something a lot of authors only dream of being capable of doing....This story is rich and full of life, true to the Renaissance Era....Loupas put a lot of work into this novel; her knowledge of the Italian Renaissance Era is apparent. Her ability to use that knowledge to create such a wonderful historical mystery puts her on par with the likes of Alison Weir and Philippa Gregory. I hope to read more novels by Elizabeth Loupas." Annabelle's Secret
by Amy Barth and Richa Kinra
Pamela's Comments:
"I decided to read Annabelle's Secret to my children (aged 8 and 10) this week. I thought it was an important topic that we should cover again. I also liked the fact that instead of me telling my children about inappropriate touches and behaviors, I was able to read them a story that had characters that they could relate to....I appreciate the honesty that this story deals with. I think that Amy covered quite a few of the issues that one might experience and the prolonged affects of sexual abuse. I would definitely recommend this book to others who are looking to educate children....Bravo Amy. Many kudos to you for stepping up and approaching this head on with such a positive story." Live Wire
by Harlan Coben
Lori's Comments:
"I LOVED IT!!!!! I LOVED IT!!!!! I LOVED IT!!!!!....If you have read the previous 9 Myron Bolitar novels, and you think you know Myron Bolitar, you will realize early into this book that you didn't know him at all....Harlan Coben is by far the best author ever of the suspense thriller. He grabs you from the first word, and like the title of one of his previous novels HOLD(s on) TIGHT until the very last word and leaves you wanting more....This is definitely a book you will want to read in one sitting, so plan accordingly and be prepared for a few surprises. This book proves than even Harlan Coben still has plenty up his sleeve to thrill and entertain us. Coben himself is the LIVE WIRE!!!" (read more)

West of Here
by Jonathan Evison
Roger's Comments:
"This is possibly the best novel to come out of the Northwest since Sometimes a Great Notion. Evison obviously did a great deal of historical research, and large parts of the novel are set in the 1890s, but somehow, this does not read like a historical novel. It has a very contemporary feel to it...This novel's rendering of the Olympic Peninsula is evocative for those familiar with the area." (read more)

"Excellent read! Great flow...author does not "bounce around" too much within the story. Lots of fascinating, factual information. At times, the book almost read like prose, which must have been difficult to achieve considering the context. I also liked the few pages of pictures that were included in the center of the book.
