Pretend the World
Pretend the World
by Kathryn Kysar

Kristina's Comments:
"To pretend the world is to apprehend the world. This collection of poetry by Kathryn Kysar traces the thread of this apprehension through the experiences of childhood, young adulthood, motherhood, and beyond, from "The Effects of Loud Rock and Roll on an Unborn Fetus" to "Wichita Cockroaches", these poems celebrate the threads of belief that connect us to each other." If I Stay
If I Stay
by Gayle Forman

Rachel's Comments:
"This book, If I Stay, is the heart wrenching tale of life, death, and whats in between. The reader is immediately attracted to Mia, who is a very ordinary girl with an amazing talent at playing the cello. In moments her life is twisted beyond repair and she must make the most important choice of her existence. This is an amazing book, and of all the books I've read, it's my favorite :)" (read more)

Under the Green Hill
Under the Green Hill
by Laura L. Sullivan

Cynthia's Comments:
"Under the Green Hill by Laura L. Sullivan paints a richly detailed picture of fairies and other fantasy creatures who live just out of sight of normal humans. They can't be trusted, and they like to play tricks on people to get their way. The natural world depends on their guardianship, as they depend on the guardianship of certain humans...[A] delightful fantasy that mother-daughter book clubs with girls aged 10 and up should enjoy reading and discussing. It's beautifully written and group members should enjoy talking about the fairy world, English castles, and the personalities of each of the children." (read more)

"This was my first reading of Neil Gaiman. I found it to be just what I was looking for! His prose is very likable, even while introducing us to an eerie new world. I found myself looking forward to my late-night reading sessions in the same way I might sneak a cookie after everyone else has gone to bed! Fun and intriguing, I definitely will read more by this talented writer!" (read more)

Out of the Dust
by Karen Hesse

Tyler's Comments:
"I love this book! It's very easy to connect with Billie Jo Kelby. She is a good character, in that she overcomes her difficulties with her hands and with forgiving her father for her mother's death. I really like how the book is written in free verse poems. It makes the reader focus more on the events that happen, and how Billie Jo feels about them. The end of the book is the best part, in my opinion." (read more)

The Book of Other People

Marlena's Comments:
"Each of the stories in this collection focus on character. We meet monsters, giants, crazy people and even some ordinary people living complicated lives. The stories are so well written, anyone who loves good, thoughtful writing will enjoy this selection. For writers, it's a great glimpse into the minds of other writers when they're challenged to write a story where the character is the driving force. Wonderful. I highly recommend it." (read more)

Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology
by Eric Brende

Rachel's Comments:
"Not only is "Better Off" covering an interesting concept, but it's engaging and well-written too....Eric shares a very personal look at his life without coming across as preachy or condescending, which is refreshing to see from a back-to-the-land type book. A word of warning though: make sure to have a whole afternoon/evening/night to read, because once you get going, you won't want to stop." (read more)

Without a Map: A Memoir
by Meredith Hall

Sara's Comments:
"In this memoir, Hall recounts being shunned and abandoned by everyone who should have been there for her (family, church, friends) when she became pregnant at 16. She gave the child up for adoption, drifted, married, had another child, and then found her first son and his adopted family. The last third of the book, after she reconnects with her first son, has some of the most stunning writing ever. At 40, she was accepted at Bowdoin College, and subsequently won a $50,000 Gift of Freedom Award that allowed her to work on this memoir. Sensitive and honest writing about an amazing life journey." The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference
by Malcolm Gladwell

Lawrence's Comments:
"[This] is a wonderfully insightful read on what causes a tipping point to occur....In all, I think it presents great ideas, though I believe it is subject to quite a bit of reasoning and one can argue one way or another whether these hypothesis are true or not. A great thing with Gladwell is he forms his arguments in a very comprehensible way, keeping one engaged. So even though you may not necessarily agree with what is said, you would at least stick around to find out what he's on about." (read more)

Darlene's Comments:
"I agree that this book should be required reading -- for anyone that has the power to go to war. A Time of Gifts (New York Review Books Classics)

Joan's Comments:
"Leigh Fermor writes beautifully and his "reading" of the landscape as he moves through it will drive most of us into other books, paintings, music and perhaps, personal memories of the same geography. I didn't want A Time of Gifts to end, but when it did, I read the 2nd volume of this travel diary, Between the Water and the Woods, and although Fermor is now in his 90s, he is writing the last volume which I eagerly await!" Sara's Comments:
"Fabulous! Gorgeous photography, and the selections from many different authors add great texture and depth of meaning. Consider the Lobster: And Other Essays
Consider the Lobster: And Other Essays
by David Foster Wallace

Peter's Comments:
"David Foster Wallace -- a succinct and distinctive name and brilliant talent, not unlike Vincent Van Gogh. And like VVG there has been a public rush to discover who this genius was that we largely overlooked before his suicide. Consider the Lobster is a great introduction to his brilliance in the essay format -- a format that he eviscerates with great skill and energy....I was fully entertained by every page. Non-fiction in the 21st century does not get any better than this. Mr. Wallace's work will only grow in stature, in spite of his untimely death. Sorta like Vincent." (read more)

The Fates Will Find Their Way
The Fates Will Find Their Way
by Hannah Pittard

John's Comments:
"Surprised to see only two reviews of this Indiespensable title. I don't often post reviews, but I am making an exception here...On the surface, this is a very well written book with a captivating narrative about a group of friends and neighbors growing up viewed through and around the lens of a missing girl from the neighborhood. Her disappearance has in many ways become a reference point for many of the characters, defining their lives before she went missing and then becoming a comparison as they grow older. A multi-person narrative, with passages interspersed showing what the missing girl's life has become. Are they fact? Speculation? Just the imaginings of her friends as they try to compare their lives with what hers must/would have been? Just asking the questions should be enough to make you want to find out. I have been an Indiespensable subscriber from the beginning and this is one of my top 5 favorites so far." (read more)

Volt
by Alan Heathcock

Mindi's Comments:
"Alan Heathcock's debut is a collection of eight short stories set in and around a small fictional town called Krafton. From the first story, "The Staying Freight", to the last, "Volt", Heathcock is a master at developing multi-layered characters within a handful of pages....Heathcock's style is one of quiet intensity, each word carefully chosen, each sentence precise. It takes skill, a bit of poetry, and a solid, strong voice to deliver a powerful short story. Heathcock delivers eight of them. I can't wait to see what he does next." (read more)

Crossing State Lines
Crossing State Lines
by Bob Holman and Carol Muske-Dukes

Judy's Comments:
"This is an amazing book of poetry. I'm not usually a reader of poetry, but occasionally something really hits home. This book is done in renga form, so each poet wrote a short one page poem that was than continued on the next page by a different poet. There are fifty four such poems in the book, all based around America. From these talented poets, all of our loves and hates, likes and dislikes, wishes and dreams about our country come out with such eloquence. The poetry is lovely, sad, hopeful, disappointed, scary, and all together a great representation of our country. It's really quite an achievement. I'd love to see more work like this." (read more)

The Girl in the Steel Corset (Steampunk Chronicles)
by Kady Cross

Lisa's Comments:
"Absolutely, the best YA Steampunk I've read to date. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Set in the late 1890's it contained everything I love about that London era, throw in the steampunk gadgets and it is a solid winner. It has super power action figures (well kind of), a bit of romance, mystery, drama, and a cast of characters that were all wonderful in their own right....Though the book was told from several points of view, I was never lost and this book moved at a very fast pace. Even with nearly 500 pages, it ended way to quickly for me. I'm glad that this is to be a series as I can't wait to see where their adventures and hopefully romance take them next." (read more)

"This is the first book I've read which uniquely illuminates the difficult and messy juxtaposition of the generations, who are struggling with addictions, affluence and ungrounded spirituality each in their own age perspectives. I know to trust that Anne Lamott will offer up an unvarnished look into human relationships....Lamott is a spiritual person, and so always offers redemption in the long run. I highly recommend this for children and parents who are caught in the web of love, tough love, and the insidious malaise which affluence has made possible." (read more)

Cat's Cradle
Cat's Cradle
by Kurt Vonnegut

Adam's Comments:
"Vonnegut's dreadfully witty view on a surprisingly icy Apocalypse will make you think. About life, science, religion, humankind, time, and last but not least, about the end of all these. Kickbacks and properties of human life and nature are highlighted with such meticulous accuracy that Vonnegut received his MA in Anthropology for this book some 20 years after having left university without a degree. An invented religion, three siblings with diverse mental and/or physical drawbacks, a dangerous chemical substance, and a mysterious narrator - who prefers to be called Jonah -- provide the main yarns that get interwoven to form a tapestry-like image depicting what it will be like if we do not behave. The not-yet-Slaughterhouse-Five yet past-Sirens-of-Titan author presents us with an elaborate parable that is sarcastic to absurdity, still at the same time may be frighteningly familiar to us."
