Winter's Bone
Winter's Bone
by Daniel Woodrell

Robin's Comments:
"Winter's Bone is a finely written book that transports the reader to the Ozarks to walk beside Ree Dolly as she tries to save her family's home after her father, Jessup, disappears. Woodrell writes in such a way that every word counts. If I were to come up with a list of 10 "must-read" books, this would make the list." (read more)

The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival (Vintage Departures)
by John Vaillant

E's Comments:
"This was one of the most enjoyable reads I've had in a long time. I was truly sorry when it ended, I was left craving more information on the Siberian people and the tiger. The book itself reads like a fiction thriller, but it's non-fiction and actually happened less than ten years ago." (read more)

The Opposite of Cold: The Northwoods Finnish Sauna Tradition

Den's Comments:
"At last, a book that is as warm in presenting the culture of the sauna as the sauna itself is healthy both for the body, mind and spirit as well as nurturing a community of friends. A wonderful read that should help advance the benefits of this meditation in heat (the western sweat lodge) into the 21st century where coming together in harmony my be the only remaining means of hope and survival." Number the Stars (Yearling Newbery)
Number the Stars (Yearling Newbery)
by Lois Lowry

Deborah's Comments:
"This is the story of the Johansen family told from the point of view of ten year old Annemarie. Through her eyes we see how Denmark fought the Nazis in their own quiet way. In the 137 pages of this book we grow with Annemarie learning about what it means to be brave and loyal and a true friend. This book should be required reading the year before Anne Frank's story is read." (read more)

The Republic of Pirates: Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribbean Pirates and the Man Who Brought Them Down
The Republic of Pirates: Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribbean Pirates and the Man Who Brought Them Down
by Colin Woodard

James's Comments:
"Having read myriad books on pirates and piracy of the Golden Age, Woodard's The Republic of Pirates is by far the most comprehensive and well-told pirateological book...weaving together the true stories of the pirates, as real and breathing people, with the world history that was unfolding around them, relating them to one another in a full picture of the Old World's explosive collision with the New World in the 17th and 18th centuries. I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone who desires to have a more complete understanding of piracy and the drive for freedom and liberty against monarchical and corporate tyranny that sparked the ideals that would one day culminate in the creation of the United States." Half a Life: A Memoir
Half a Life: A Memoir
by Darin Strauss

Nancy's Comments:
"Darin Strauss feels guilty, although he did nothing wrong. He also grieves for nearly two decades, although he didn't really know the girl who died. In "Half A Life", Strauss describes his experience after driving a car that collided with a bicyclist, who also attended his high school, and who did not survive the crash. It is a compelling read. Strauss' writes using matter-of-fact language, yet his descriptions of his feelings and the effect the accident had on his life are poignant and thought-provoking." (read more)

My Usual Game: Adventures in Golf
by David Owen

Rick's Comments:
"David Owen has given us a literate, droll, sometimes laugh-out-loud funny look at the game of golf as we "hackers" play it. The title comes from an old saying (Scottish, I believe) that says "I wish that just once I would play my usual game". That kind of sums up golf for me. I look forward to reading it again soon." The Story Sisters
The Story Sisters
by Alice Hoffman

Ruth's Comments:
"Unforgettable relationship between a trio of sisters, so very different, but so fiercely united as young girls that they create their own language. As the girls mature, Elv, the eldest who made up their fairy world, spirals out of control, Claire blindly supports her wayward sibling, and Meg attempts to protect Claire from Elv. You will laugh and cry over the life experiences of the sisters and their mother while the writer in all of us sighs in longing that we could write passages as eloquent as those of Alice Hoffman. Hoffman is a master at magical realism." (read more)

Crave (Crave)
by Laura J. Burns

Lisa's Comments:
"As a lover of paranormal romance, this was an awesome book. As a lover of YA novels, I felt it hit the nail on the head consistently. You would think by know I'd be burnt out on vampire books but the authors have taken the oldest, most used, paranormal creature -- the vampire -- and penned a fresh new tale that will keep me and others up all night reading just one more chapter. I can definitely recommend this for middle school and up, though I (an adult reader) was just as hooked by this great story." (read more)

13 Words
by Lemony Snicket and Maira Kalman

Brook's Comments:
"If I got married for the Kitchen Aid, then I had a kid so we could share Lemony Snicket and Maira Kalman's 13 Words. 13 Words is funny, smart and kind of close to perfect. We love it all -- the unlucky number, the amazing illustration of a goat in a spiffy jacket, and of course the best ever despondent blue bird. All of it, in the words of my almost three year old, is "SO Silly!" And there is nothing sillier nor sweeter than hearing him say some of those 13 words, especially "despondent" and "haberdashery". I could listen to him saying haberdashery all day. AND he now wants a birthday cake with "panache" and for that i am FOREVER in their debt. If not a bit despondent. Now my 2 year old and I share not only 13 words, but two favorite authors and one of the best books around." (read more)

50 Jobs in 50 States: One Man's Journey of Discovery Across America
50 Jobs in 50 States: One Man's Journey of Discovery Across America
by Daniel Seddiqui

Kelly's Comments:
"Great commentary on the employment system in America! Entertaining too. Daniel's inspirational story has been featured on local, national, and international news, websites, and other media outlets since the very start of his journey. And having seen some of the videos and articles, I had no doubt that this kid had done something admirable. Daniel had stared right back into the eyes of rejection and said, 'You don't own me.' I'm glad I picked up a copy of his book, though. Because I thought I knew the story... I thought I knew all there was to know. It's basic: Like many graduates, Daniel can't find a job, so he gets 50. Take that unemployment rate! Good for him. Case closed. ...Turns out, I was wrong. I read 50 Jobs in 50 States just about a month after it came out. Not only was the book an entertaining read, but I was surprised at how little I really knew about his journey." (read more)

Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making
by Catherynne M. Valente

Christin's Comments:
"It's supposedly a YA book, but it's really for anyone who loves fairytales. Plus, Valente's use of language is so lush (she's also a poet, which is obvious) the prose feels a little more substantial than the usual YA fare (which I love, don't get me wrong), so I really think adults would love it, even if they don't usually go for YA. I loved everything about this book. I had a huge smile on my face when I finished it. It definitely incorporates a lot of familiar fairytale tropes, but Valente manages to keep things feeling fresh and innovative at the same time." (read more)

Finn Family Moomintroll (Moomintrolls)
by Tove Jansson

Nancy's Comments:
"This is one of the best kept secrets in children's literature. It is a magical, beautiful, and gentle book. I have read it many times and give it out to friends often. The Moomin family is a patched together and constantly changing group of odd creatures....They live in the middle of the forest, where they are surprisingly unsurprised by constant odd visitors and happenings....Tove Jansson's books gently and delightfully celebrate the extraordinary in ordinary life -- or maybe the ordinary in the extraordinary. At any rate, she was a creative, independent spirit and I'm extremely grateful that I discovered her books as a child." (read more)

Fingersmith: A Novel
by Sarah Waters

Jessica's Comments:
"Historical fiction at it's best and most enjoyable. I have not lost so much sleep for a book in a very long time. Thought it took me a little while to get into at first, once I did, I was totally hooked. Incredibly suspenseful and fascinating the particular way that she somewhat unexpectedly tells the story from both protagonists' point of view. This was one that stayed with me for quite a while after I finished it; I'd wake up wondering what became of the characters, Sue and Maud. I was sorry it was over, but glad I still have a few more of Sarah Waters' books to read." (read more)

by Vanessa Veselka

Ryan's Comments:
"[L]et me say upfront that the whole alternate-world thing isn't really relevant to the guts of this story. Doesn't hurt it either, but it's not at all what makes this story work so gorgeously. It's the voice, the voice of the narrator. It is so stunningly unique, diamond-hard and silk at the same time. This book's rhythms slide between pounding hot iron at a forge and sleepy, half-remembered dreams in a perfect, seamless weld....[O]n a weird whim, I bought an autographed copy. It's going on my shelves next to my autographed Vonnegut and my autographed Studs Terkel, two writers who also looked clear-eyed at our times and our species and found, despite it all, cause for hope." One Across, Two Down
One Across, Two Down
by Ruth Rendell

Deb's Comments:
"Though many readers don't consider this one of Rendell's best mysteries, I've always loved it....I was pleasantly surprised at the deftness with which she portrays the simple characters in this story of greed....As with all of Rendell's books, I am drawn more to the characters and her amazing ability to comprehend the psychology of what makes them who they are, than I am to mere plot. In this case the plot is simple, yet holds one's attention. You have a hunch of what waits around the corner, but you don't know how it will play out. This little novel is an easy read, but don't mistake easy for carelessly written. Here you will find Rendell's typical eye for detail, strong characterization, and a story told in her own unique style." (read more)

Laura's Comments:
"I loved this book. I was aware of the situation (two journalists imprisoned in North Korea for crossing into Korean territory from China) while it was happening, but the book enriched my memory and my understanding of the intrigue and political maneuvering that was involved in arranging the release of the journalists. "I actually had tears in my eyes at the end of this book -- not because it was sad but because it was so poignant. Dederer relates the challenge of yoga poses to the challenges she is experiencing in her life as a new mother and sometimes frustrated wife in a "keep up with the Joneses" new mother Seattle environment.
