World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
by Max Brooks

Tiffany's Comments:
"I loved this book. It's one of the most realistic and frightening novels of zombie apocalypse imaginable. It looks at how America and the government would be changed if a zombie outbreak occured today. Who would survive and who most likly wouldn't. A scary good read!" (read more)

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Lucy's Comments:
"I really enjoyed the experimentation in medium in Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. The use of authentic vintage photographs made it feel like I was sorting through the documents in someone's attic. The story would have been entertaining without the photographs, but with them, it was a thoroughly memorable and interesting read." (read more)

"I've read this book at least three times and am surprised each time. The scope is amazing and I feel connected to each character which is a huge accomplishment. Pobby and Dingan
Pobby and Dingan
by Ben Rice

Nurture's Comments:
"This is a charming and heartbreaking story set in the opal fields of Lightning Ridge. The author uses words with skill. We feel the hot, dusty air in our lungs, we experience the ostracism and community of spirit of small town Australia and our hearts tear in two for the unhappy little girl who has lost her friends. This book may be short, but it is potent. I highly recommend it." (read more)

Demonology
Demonology
by Rick Moody

Chantal's Comments:
"It seems such a long time since I've been challenged as a reader. Maybe it's just me (I'm a hopeless word nerd), but I tend to receive a rush of excitement akin to an electrical jolt whenever a writer uses "le mot juste", a word or phrase pregnant with the exact meaning he wants to convey no matter how rare or obscure its usage. Demonology abounds with these little definition-seeking expeditions (thank goodness for my e-reader's embedded dictionary). Not only have I developed a crush on the author's wordsmith skills but I have discovered in Rick Moody a master story-teller as well." (read more)

Before the Storm
by Diane Chamberlain

Dalene's Comments:
"What a story the author has woven. I was amazed at all the twists and the turns that have come and gone in this book. When you think you know what way it's going, there's another curve thrown at you....This book is told via each different main character's point of view and done very well. The book focuses on the social problem of fetal alcohol syndrome disorder (FASD) and was informative enough without being a non-fiction feel book. The characters are all very strong and poignant in the plot." (read more)

Bridge of Scarlet Leaves

Kelly's Comments:
"WOW!!!! This was a GREAT book. Bridge of Scarlet Leaves is such an emotional book. When you think it can't get any worst it does. Kristina does a wonderful of sucking us into the world that she has created. A world that revolves around a set of kids and one horrible event. Pearl Harbor. It is truly amazing how people were treated back then. The struggle that these kids have to go through on a daily basis makes me realize that we should all be thankful for the things we have in our life. I loved every page of this book." (read more)

The Hour of the Star
The Hour of the Star
by Clarice Lispector

Beverly's Comments:
"Take Borges, Kafka, or Calvino; mix in Woolf and Duras, add an all-consuming passion and you will have Clarice Lispector. A Brazilian writer who looks like Marlene Deitrich. This book carried me away from the real world; down and through labyrinths of emotion from tears to joy and back again. She gives you everything, doesn't hold back, she doesn't just "tell" a story, she grabs you by the throat and submerges you into her world completely. Erotic, intuitive, magical her style is utterly refreshing! This book was a life changing experience in ways I haven't experienced since reading Virginia Woolf. I can't say enough good stuff about it, nor can I wait to read another by her!!" (read more)

A Grief Observed
by C.S. Lewis

Roy's Comments:
"Absolutely the hardest book to stomach because of the nature of the book and its amazing description of what a person can go through with a significant loss. Keep the Kleenex handy because even I, as tough as I think I am, felt the weight of every painful admission of the grief process in these pages. It makes me dread the loss of my loved ones, a future event I may have to deal with one day. I will keep this book tucked away, just in case. It is well written by one of my favorite authors. Two thumbs up." (read more)

Alone
Alone
by Lisa Gardner

Nurture's Comments:
"This book was very hard to put down. In fact, I stayed up all night because I couldn't bear not knowing what happened next. Needless to say, I am one very tired lady right now. It was worth the lack of sleep however. This book lets us know from the outset who the bad guys are, so rather than trying to guess the culprit, the suspense is built around whether the heroine will be believed, or whether the bad guys will win. Having said that, for the most part the characters in this story are neither wholly bad or wholly good. Rather they are flawed human beings, trying hard to make the best of a bad situation. This serves the purpose of humanizing them and leaves us wondering - what would we do if we were put in that situation? If you like mystery and suspense in your novels, you will like this book." The Running Dream
by Wendelin Van Draanen

Curtis's Comments:
"I was attracted to this book because I'm a runner, and I also dream about running. I really liked the author's realistic treatment of Jessica's transition through the emotional stages of her recovery. The author must have done lots of research into the whole issue of rehabilitation from an amputation. I liked how Jessica's perspective was gently expanded by her interactions with other disabled characters during the course of the story. Eventually she comes to understand that it's not all about her, and pushes herself to help fulfill someone else's running dream. A wonderful story." (read more)

"This book was suggested by our travel outfitters as a good book to read in advance of our trip to Panama. Our adventure in Panama was great, but finding this book was one of the greatest pleasures of that journey. It's absolutely riveting. Though the author uses some historical context and some real events, it is a beautiful work of fiction. His characters are so real and their hopes and fears crawl into your heart. Riding Fury Home: A Memoir
Riding Fury Home: A Memoir
by Chana Wilson

Jeanne's Comments:
"It reads like the very best fiction, with vivid details that stimulate all the senses, heart pounding scenes that keep the pages turning, and comical anecdotes that are both thought-provoking and fun. But this story is true, and relentlessly truthful, told without a hint of sensationalism or sentimentality....Wilson carries the reader directly into emotions that are hard to face, much less write about -- shame, grief, rage, even the feeling of not being able to feel -- and she comes out unequivocally on the side of hope. For me, that persistent hope was the gift at the center of this delightful read. I got to witness, through one woman's story, how resilient we humans can be, and how as we grow, we ultimately seem to lean toward joy." (read more)

The Sense of an Ending
The Sense of an Ending
by Julian Barnes

Nicole's Comments:
"The book is rich with the tensions between a life of contentment vs. a life filled with the kind of romance, suffering and adventure that make a great novel. The book opens with the bond between Tony and his school friends, forged with the shared experience of being philospher-kings at the age of adolescent discontent and unrest. It is a treat to read. The rest of the story unfolds like a mystery, told mostly from the vantage point of Tony's retirement. As Tony comes to understand the impact of his youthful shadow side on his life and the lives of some of his intimates, he has to question his own characterization of his life. The story's ending is quietly devastating in a really rich way." (read more)
