Songs in Ordinary Time (Oprah's Book Club)
by Mary McGarry Morris
Trudi's Comments:
"I could not put this book down. The author draws you in with details about each character, until you feel as though you live among them. The saddest hour was when I read the last page...because the book was no more. So now I am reading more of Mary Mcgarry Morris." (read more)

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire #1)
by George R. R. Martin
Elizabeth's Comments:
"An amazing beginning to this series which will suck in even the most adverse-to-fantasy readers such as myself. The character and story development is beyond reproach and more engrossing than the TV show which introduced me to the story. I don't want to count the hours of sleep this page turner cost me, nor what the next installments will." (read more)

The Raging Quiet
by Sherryl Jordan
Iona's Comments:
"This book has been my all time favourite, I read it when I was 11, and now, at 19, I still read it. The love story between Raven and Marnie really made my heart thump...it is hard for to find a believable love story like this....Marnie can relate to alot of other girls in the world, how head strong and willing she is to try to understand, to think of others before herself but for it to crumble down all around her really taught me the lesson of "it's good to be head strong and proud, but it'll be a hard life and sometimes it's ok to keep your mouth shut."
This book has always been here for me, and I will love it untill the end of time." (read more)

Grave Mercy (His Fair Assassin Trilogy #1)
by Robin La Fevers
Vicki's Comments:
"I found Grave Mercy a refreshing and intriguing start to what I can only imagine will be a wonderful series. I'd recommend it for those who love Historical Fiction and YA, but don't mind a little Fantasy and Romance thrown into the mix. There is a fair amount of violence and many references to sex, so I'd place this as appropriate for late high-school and older, despite the young characters and inconsiderable language. Daunting as the length may be, Grave Mercy is one book you surely don't want to miss.
Approximate Reading Time: 9.5 hours" (read more)

Lone Wolf
by Jodi Picoult
Lynn's Comments:
"Euthanasia is always a hot-button topic. In this tale of a man teetering on the brink of death Picoult provides the reader with the back-story and feelings of each family member as they deal with the situation. Luke, the character around whom the story revolves lies in a coma so while there is no present tense for him, the story of his past, living in a wolf pack was the most compelling part of the book for me. Lots of fascinating information, well told." (read more)

The Ok Book
by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
Kristina's Comments:
"This book is terrific for the very young, those of us approaching older, and everyone in between. It's difficult to find what we're passionate about in life unless we try new things. For a variety of reasons, many of us are afraid to attempt new things. I use this book to remind my teen-aged students to try new experiences, to be creative, or devote time to talents until they find something they are more than "OK" at doing. We discuss the importance of finding things in life that we feel passionate about, and then students work on dream boards/goal setting. As an adult, The OK Book is a reminder to take my own advice and live a little!" (read more)

The Mindful Writer: Noble Truths of the Writing Life
by Dinty W. Moore
Susan's Comments:
"The Mindful Writer is so much more than a collection of great quotes by writers and artists. Moore's reflections on those quotes, and his application of this collective wisdom to our creative lives is spot on. I love the way he applies what he's learned from writing (and teaching writing) to his spiritual journey in Buddhism, and then cycles back from the spiritual to the practical with tenets for every day living. I read The Mindful Writer while in the throes of finishing my first novel, and it fueled my enthusiasm here at the end of the journey....A wonderful, short, readable book for writers, readers, artists, and anyone interested in enriching their life." The Disenchantments
by Nina Lacour
Amie's Comments:
"I felt a strange kinship with the Colby, as it brought out many long-buried facets of my own life. The road trip is metaphoric, leading the characters in a new phase of enlightenment. Anyone who reads it will find something familiar, something that will ring true in past and present experiences. I appreciated the honesty, the character flaws and attributes and more importantly, the phoenix rising from the flames of wrecked ideology." (read more)

Pattern Magic
by Tomoko Nakamichi
Carmen's Comments:
"I have been drooling over this book since I first encountered it in Japanese, so when I bumped into it on the shelves at Powell's in an English translation, my heart literally began to race with happiness. While the written instruction does provide some guidance, I expect to spend a lot of time playing with the concepts to create a predictable result. That said, I can't recall a single book or magazine that has so inspired me to sew. The layout and photography are also fantastic and I love how clearly she demonstrates that these ideas are just a foundation for a thousand variations. I highly recommend this book, even if only for daydreaming and better understanding construction." (read more)

Wife 22
by Melanie Gideon
Heather's Comments:
"Wife 22: A Novel by Melanie Gideon is a story about a woman, Alice Buckle, who is hitting middle age and is trying to figure out her life....This book had me from page one where the first thing I read is "GOOGLE SEARCH 'Eyelid Drooping'." When I opened to this page, I found myself so caught up in the story that I couldn't put the book down until I finished it. Ms. Gideon tells the story of Alice Buckle through narrative, internet searches, Facebook, and texting. Alice became a very believable character and I felt myself being caught up in her emotions, her confusions, and her life....This is one of those rare books where I felt that I was literally looking into a magic ball and watching this other woman's life play out. At the end of the book, I even had tears because of what Alice was going through and how she was reacting to and handling everything that is going on in her life....I cannot envision it being [Ms. Gideon's] last. At least, I hope that it isn't her last. She has a way of connecting to the reader and I look forward to looking into another magic ball where I cannot look away until I know how it ends." The Lodge Cast Iron Cookbook: A Treasury of Timeless, Delicious Recipes
by Pam (com) Hoenig
Heidi's Comments:
"Iron cookery is trendy once again. Perhaps the changes of income and economy remind us that value is often reflected in length of use rather than throw-away products. Cast iron is perhaps the hallmark of this value and Lodge Logic is the rock star of cast iron. Most people know if you have any cast iron you probably love it!....The arrival of this cookbook is welcome and exciting. A variety of other cookbooks have come on the market at the same time. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet
by David Mitchell
Lorna's Comments:
"This book is nothing you expect it to be. There are no stereotypes of Japanese or Asian culture, no dragon women and no sword swinging, gravity defying samurai. David Mitchell has created a wholly believable 18th Century Nagasaki in which characters act and talk as the time expects. The greatest surprise is that Mitchell has no qualms about making his characters face consequences for their actions, whether the consequence is just or not. The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet is a must read for anyone who wants to become truly emerged in a story." (read more)

The King's Daughter

Gail's Comments:
"As the beautiful and all important eldest daughter of Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York is a dynastic pawn. Before her younger brother can be crowned, her parents' marriage is discovered to be bigamous, and all its offspring are declared illegitimate by Parliament....Hers is at once a sad and a triumphant story. The Grace of Silence: A Memoir

The End of America: A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot
by Naomi Wolf
Tina's Comments:
"Very good read...very creepy...seriously, I did get a little paranoid at times. It was reminiscent of 1984, except for it was real. We all knew the Bush administration was bad, but I don't think any of us knew it was necessarily to the extent that Wolf talks about in this book. Although, not surprising at all. There is also a documentary that is based on this book, and I highly recommend that too, "End of America." She explains that this is not a conspiracy theory book, and she is not accusing anyone in the administration of using Hitler/Stalin/Mussolini tactics, but they are eerily similar. It's also a quick read, she is very to-the-point, and easy to understand." (read more)

The Redbreast
by Jo Nesbo
Deborah's Comments:
"Jo Nesbo is known for his crime novels about my new favorite Detective Harry Hole, of the Oslo Crime Squad. "Red Breast" isn't even his first novel, but it is the first Nesbo novel I've read. I loved Steig Larsson, and so, at the suggestion of my sister and following the Scandinavian theme, I started on the Harry Hole series....What makes Harry Hole so attractive? He's cut from a classic American (1930's) mold; a loner, with lots of flaws, including use of illegal substances, trouble with maintaining a relationship with women, insubordination, and the tendency toward depression one expects of tragic heroes. Like Stieg Larsson's hero Mikael Blomkvist he is fully committed to ending the activities of extremely bad men, but unlike Blomkvist, he struggles with his own personal demons as well as with the expectations of his career and subtle threads of corruption that are part of a continuing theme in the two books I've read. Nesbo is a brilliant plotter and everything comes together in the end of each of these books in a highly satisfying way." (read more)

The Professionals
by Owen Laukkanen
Yvonne's Comments:
"Great reading entertainment with big screen potential. The Professionals was my book-of-the-week for my daily 30-60 minute stationary bike ride and was a great choice. The frequent scene changes (3-6 page chapters) kept my eyes off the clock and the story moving forward. The characters were believable and I wasn't sure who I liked more, the kidnappers or the cops. It would make a great take-on-vacation read and I'll be recommending it to friends." (read more)

The Reeducation of Cherry Truong
by Aimee Phan
Beth's Comments:
"Aimee Phan has done it again! I love this novel as much as I loved "We Should Never Meet." Aimee Phan knows how to write about families - the love, the pain, the intimacy, the distance!!! Amazing. Every time I thought I knew which character I most sympathized and identified with, along came another well-rounded, thoughtful portrait of a seemingly real human being.
Thanks to the complexities and stunning layers of plot, lineage and meaning, I was never, ever bored -- which is the number one reason I put books down. Not this one! I picked it up every chance I got, over and over again until it was done! Beautiful." (read more)

The Hare with Amber Eyes: A Hidden Inheritance
by Edmund de Waal
Paula's Comments:
"I greatly enjoyed this book for many reasons. First, it's a fascinating story in its own right, and de Waal's choice to tell it the way he researched it means that we follow him every step of the way (including the surprises in his visit to Odessa). Second, it takes us down the fascinating byways of early 20th-century art through the history of Charles Ephrussi (collector, critic, and friend of artists); I'm reasonably knowledgeable about art history, but I learned a lot from the book. Third, the author (probably because he's an artist himself) has a facility for choosing telling details -- his account of the Anschluss is horrifying not because he piles up atrocities but because he focuses on how the minutiae of daily life were irrevocably altered. Finally, I lived in Vienna for a couple of years, knew many of the places he describes, and heard various versions of the history he recounts; but this was a far more personal "take" on the place and the people, and I feel it gave me a better perspective. Highly recommended." (read more)

The Loss Library and Other Unfinished Stories (Africa List)
by Ivan Vladislavic and Sunandini Banerjee
George's Comments:
"These are eleven stories South African writer Ivan Vladislavic imagined but couldn't write, or he started to write and couldn't finish. He flushes those ideas out for the reader - some are quirky, some are very funny, and a couple of them are high concept.
The Loss Library, the most complete story in the book, is a guided tour of a library of books that don't exit. Books that would have been written had their writers not died young, books that were never written because their authors lost faith in them, books that came to authors in their dreams but were forgotten in the light of day.
Beautiful illustrations and design by Sunandini Banerjee make this a book for those who appreciate the touch, the feel of a physical book and words that can't be deleted, or lost." (read more)
