Perfect Chaos: A Daughter's Journey to Survive Bipolar, a Mother's Struggle to Save Her
by Linea Johnson and Cinda Johnson
Helen's Comments:
"This is a brutally honest, sometimes painful, story of a family coming to grips with a member with a mental illness, and especially with Linea's strength and determination to be well. Alternately written in the first person by each, not only does it chronicle the family's struggles with the illness, but it offers their experiences with finding competent health-care professionals and their ongoing never-ending battles with their insurance company to cover the needed treatments....This book is deeply personal, but it provides so much insight for others who face a mental health challenge or for families that have a loved one with a mental illness. Their goal is to help remove the stigma of mental illness and to provide some hope and strength for all those who are affected by it. There is an omission in the story in that the father is not portrayed as the ever-present stalwart rock that he is and has been throughout this ordeal. He is an unsung hero." (read more)

Masque of the Red Death
by Bethany Griffin
Angelique's Comments:
"So much more the steampunk. So much more than romance. So much more than YA. While this book did have all that -- and an airship -- it was great literature. The conflicted emotions of the characters made this much more like the Poe short story it was inspired by than the genre it is relegated to. No one is perfect and no one is safe. And, happily for us, the ending isn't sappy." (read more)

I'll Walk Alone
by Mary Higgins Clark
Adya's Comments:
"Mary Higgins continues to weave her magic. The book is so gripping I had to finish it in one marathon reading session. Keeps you guessing at every turn. Though when the mystery unravels, you feel like you guessed it (a little), but the journey is totally worth it (my nails might not agree)!" (read more)

The Listeners
by Leni Zumas
Christopher's Comments:
"I love this book. Leni Zumas's masterful command of language makes for an engrossing, entertaining read. The minimal use of conventional exposition lets the story unfold on its own, unencumbered by strictures of chronology, logic, or tradition. This is one of the most powerfully written books I've read in a long time." (read more)

The Senator's Wife (Vintage Contemporaries)
by Sue Miller
Aimee's Comments:
"The Senator's Wife is one of the most amazing stories that I have read (and, I have read MANY!), in that it was written with clarity, depth, and gentle directness. It was easy to read, but, difficult to put down. It is one of the few books that will go into my library to be read again...and, again, to rethink what I have read...to further understand the story told about the connection between two women.
The climax, the finale, and, what led up to it, was...well...disgusting to me when I realized what was happening. I had to put the book down and I had to force myself to pick it up again. I couldn't believe what was happening, not that these things don't happen in real lives, but, that it was actually written by a person, an author. It was created by the author. What a creative and thougfhtful mind had created this story, this horrible event.
Sue Miller, you are an amazing author. Congrats! I will read more of your books." (read more)

The Probable Future
by Alice Hoffman
Prentise's Comments:
"I was stunned by the deep insight into the minds of both men and women in this book, and I loved the way the author makes the current teen with her special power a very modern and realistic teenager. The way Hoffman explores the challenging relationships between grandmother, mother, daughter, and the men in their lives, is quite moving and sometimes sad, especially when it isn't expressed until the end of someone's life....I thought it was wonderful, and it made me want to heal the female relationships in my family, as well as nurture and express my own unique insights and abilities." Rot & Ruin
by Jonathan Maberry
Mike's Comments:
"Young adult lit has made so many advancements since I was a teenager. While the cover and title would suggest a more grisly subject matter, Rot & Ruin isn't that at all. There are plenty of zombies, but the main focus is on the relationship between the Imura brothers. One a teenager disillusioned with this new world of danger and zombies - he really just wants to hang out with his school buddies and maybe get a girlfriend. His brother, on the other hand, is immersed in the life outside of the town they live in referred to as ''the ruin''. He is a bounty hunter who gets paid by families in town to end their family member's misery of those who have turned. In the vein of ''hunger games'' he does this to help support he and his brother Bennie and keep them in rations which are limited....I found it hard to put this book down, and was happy to find out there are currently two other books in the Imura brothers as they venture further out into ''the ruin''." The Descendants
by Kaui Hart Hemmings
Scott's Comments:
"It is a rare treat to find a book that tackles marriage, infidelity, death, and parenting in one ambitious story. Rarer still to find a novel that does so with humor, grace, and wisdom. But, that is exactly what Kaui Hart Hemmings provides in The Descendants....The sparse writing matches the character perfectly, and the observational humor keeps the characters (and story) from taking itself too seriously. Over too soon, I could not put this book down. Hemmings is a fresh voice and a genuine pleasure to read." (read more)

Death Comes to Pemberley
by P. D. James
Tinu's Comments:
"As a sequel to Pride and Prejudice, Death Comes to Pemberley is a satisfying effort. As a mystery, it is not conventional and probably not what most of us expected when we first heard about the book. The way the story plays out is somewhat close to the time and place depicted and to Austen's style. As a connoisseur of Jane Austen books, I was happy to read it, revisiting the characters from Pride and Prejudice and seeing their later lives depicted in a way which conforms to the depth and complexity that Austen gave her characters.
A good read for Jane Austen fans!" (read more)

Lord Jim: A Tale (Everyman's Library)
by Joseph Conrad
Gregory's Comments:
"LORD JIM is a novel focused on the imperial zeitgeist of the age. The age is the years between 1876 to the beginning of world war one. Europe was beaming in its nationalism, imperialism, and as well as alliances between nation states. Europe could be seen as a cage where the main event in the WWE would be held, in this corner Germany and the Hapsburgs vs. London and France. We see explorers controlling new lands and new people. We find adventures awaiting....The book overall was imperially commanding." (read more)

The Kindly Ones
by Jonathan Littell
David's Comments:
""Abandon hope all ye who enter here," reads the inscription Dante discovers over the gates of Hell. Good advice for all those who pick up Jonathan Littell's The Kindly Ones, weighing in at 976 pages in its English translation. But if you have the stomach to traverse this Brughellian landscape, you will discover both a meticulously researched panorama of the Nazi state and a wonderfully realized portrait one of its loyal devils....[I]f you believe that in this world justice prevails, or that, at least in fiction, it should, you will find this book an unforgivable insult. However, if you find that questions about the nature of crime, genocide, and of evil itself lead to even more complex and confounding answers, this book will both edify and perversely delight you." Imagine: How Creativity Works
by Jonah Lehrer
Bruce 's Comments:
"This book goes beyond scientific studies to consider creativity as it is experienced in the real world. It uses Bob Dylan's writing methods, the drug habits of poets, the inspiration of an autistic surfer who invented a new surfer move, and much more to consider the sources of inspiration and genius, and provides a fine analysis of thought processes with an eye to showing how these can be used more efficiently by everyone. The result is a lively survey of the sources of inspiration in us all, with keys to unlocking creative potential through exercises and adjustments" (read more)

Notes from a Small Island
by Bill Bryson
Joel's Comments:
"If you've ever wanted to explore Britain through the eyes of your fussy, slightly curmudgeonly, but ultimately warm and lovable uncle, Bryson's book is a must own. His appreciation for the minutiae of British life comes through in his witty and detailed descriptions of everything from British naming conventions (visit fabulous Nether Wallop) to the eccentricities of the fifth Duke of Portland and his underground mansion. For better or worse Bryson will bring out the anglophile in you through this ode to the motherland, and about the time you finish reading you'll want to start planning your own cross country trek."
