Forge (Seeds of America)
Forge (Seeds of America)
by Laurie Halse Anderson

Michelle 's Comments:
"Laurie Halse Anderson is always dependable as an evocative writer with strong characters and a realistic, heart-breaking plot. Forge, the sequel to Chains, lives up to her talent and I appreciate that. It's not my favorite book by her but it's pretty interesting and impressive how she was able to create such a small story that could place her two main characters in such diverse places....In Chains, the book preceding Forge, Curzon was seen by Isabel as a boy completely infatuated with the idea of freedom and with the war he was a convert. I don't see that in this book. I guess that's my only complaint about the book and it's a small complaint. It was so well done I'd recommend it to anyone over the age of 11." (read more)

The Age of Miracles
The Age of Miracles
by Karen Thompson Walker

Neeraj's Comments:
"The best part of 'The Age of Miracles' is Julia's story, and only a small part of that story has to do with the so-called "slowing" of the Earth's rotation. The science-fiction aspect of the novel is merely a backdrop for the very identifiable coming-of-age story. By the end of the story, it becomes evident that it is not the catastrophes in one's life that define them, but rather how one goes about picking up the pieces..." (read more)

The Miles Between
The Miles Between
by Mary E. Pearson

Giovanna's Comments:
"Beginning this book, I was unsure whether I would continue it or not. I'm not usually into the whole 'rebellious teen' thing, but I pushed myself to finish the first few chapters. I didn't stop after that. This book is very well written and put together with a good flow. The twist at the end (which I refuse to further explain because I don't want to give away the book's ending!) was so surprising, I actually gasped out loud. I definitely recommend the book." "For you urban hikers this trail guide is truly awesome and totally useful! For you urban hikers who need to get out and about--beautiful! It's totally comprehensive for trails that are driveable within an hour and a half, and for those walkable and around town...totally worth the buy. Larry Gets Lost in Portland

"I love my city, and I really love this book! This is a beautifully illustrated guide to Portland landmarks for children. It's a very simple story, not a lot of words, so I'd say it would be great for pre-school age kiddos. The colors are wonderful (and bright)! The Social Conquest of Earth
The Social Conquest of Earth
by Edward O. Wilson

Kirsten's Comments:
"Definitely E.O. Wilson's swan song. He admits mistakes and ends up furthering our understanding of the human condition. The book is science heavy at points (you can always skip ahead if you don't want to learn the meaning of haplodiploidy). Overall Wilson provides insight into how we got to be humans and where we should go from here. Wilson is one of the greatest living biologists and with this book I believe his legacy will be even greater." (read more)

Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity
by Katherine Boo

Jerilyn's Comments:
"What I do not see, I cannot know. Except now I know. Behind the Beautiful Forevers took me to the slums of Mumbai India and I will never be the same. With Katherine Boo's award winning writing, I could almost smell the stench and feel the anguish of the real life characters. Yet, this was not a morose or sad expose, it was a lovely testament to hope and the human spirit. I was moved and will forever remember." (read more)

Kasher in the Rye: The True Tale of a White Boy from Oakland Who Became a Drug Addict, Criminal, Mental Patient, and Then Turned 16
by Moshe Kasher

Valerie's Comments:
"The author is a stand-up comic who turns a bit serious in documenting a childhood divided between a feminist mom on the west coast and an orthodox Jewish father on the east coast. Oh, and both of his parents are deaf. This is an adolescent's tale of feeling always like the "other", which leads him to explore various escape routes into comedy, gang life, and drug and alcohol addiction. The author seems to have made it through the worst, but here's hoping for a sequel, as the book, just like life, offers no neatly tied-up, happy ending." (read more)

Plastic-Free: How I Kicked the Plastic Habit and How You Can Too
by Beth Terry

Diana's Comments:
"Bravo! When I told someone I was on a journey to eliminate all plastic from my home they laughed at me. Understandably --it's a daunting mission in today's environment. Thank you Terry, for sharing my passion and for broadcasting the message that it can be done by changing habits and being conscientious. This is a beginning, I'd love to see a more in-depth follow up for those well on their way to breaking free from being a lemming; something that tackles the tougher questions. Maybe something targeted toward the smaller businesses for ideas --a resource for packaging materials; distribution and stepping up their businesses without falling into the large manufacturing pitfalls." The Echo Maker
The Echo Maker
by Richard Powers

Teresa's Comments:
"This is a chilling story involving a brilliant neuroscientist whose self confidence and career are cracking; a young wastrel (Mark) in Nebraska who struggles to return to himself or some consistent, recognizable self, after a terrible car accident; Mark's sister (Karen), unrecognized by her brother and floundering between lovers and identities herself. There's also a mysterious medical aide, far too smart for her lowly caregiving position, intent on helping Mark, and an activist environmentalist intent on saving The Platte River valley to allow the ancient migration of cranes to continue. More delicious characters include a developer, and Mark's lowlife drinking buddies. This perhaps simplistic cast indicates that the story is character driven, but what I loved about it was a layering of metaphors linking the natural world to this troubled set of individuals. The theme is identity and the mind. Delicious reading." (read more)

John Dies at the End
by David Wong

Karen's Comments:
"Think you know what happens at the end of this book? Think again! This is a roller coaster ride of a book that abducts you into its really messed-up alternative universe with some really fun writing to entertain you on the journey. The two main characters — the narrator and his titular buddy — engage in an obscenely funny, screwball friendship that felt completely real. I loved the way the college-boy humor splayed seamlessly against a scary, surreal backdrop, with both elements somehow in perfect balance." (read more)

Seraphina
Seraphina
by Rachel Hartman

Nicole's Comments:
"Just when you think nothing new can be done with dragons, Rachel Hartman enters the YA landscape with Seraphina, offering a fresh take on the fabled fantasy creatures. In her world, dragons are attempting to live peacefully among humans in the form of "saars" — dragons who have taken human skin....For any fans of fantasy — from Christopher Paolini to Tolkien — I highly recommend this book. I absolutely loved this book. Though Phina's father is very one-dimensional, he is the exception rather than the rule. Fun, fast read on learning to trust and taking risks and embracing who you are. Can't wait to see what Hartman releases next." (read more)

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil: A Savannah Story
by John Berendt

Kelly's Comments:
"I couldn't put this book down. Not because it was suspenseful or action packed, but because Berendts' writing style is so easygoing. The development of each character is great because it really makes everything so much more realistic. Sometimes weirder things do actually happen in true life. There is no shortage of odd in this book but it's more than that, it's the spirit and the culture of Savannah and it's people that he captures. Totally unique. "Enjoyed three out of the five stories in this collection immensely. 'Pastoralia,' 'Sea Oak,' and 'The Barber's Unhappiness' are all terrific reads, and I guarantee each will have you laughing out loud and biting your knuckle during their respective highs and lows. That said, the other two stories -- 'Winky' and 'The Falls'-- fall flat in comparison, feel a little less genuine, and don't seem to have quite as much to say. Still, the price of admission is well worth it -- if you're alive and breathing (or if you're not, but you still have a sense of humor), you owe it to yourself to pick up this book." (read more)
