The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard
by Elmore Leonard
Brett's Comments:
"Wow, talk about a dream collection! Elmore Leonard wrote some of the best western stories of the 1950s and 1960s and here they are in one collection. He's the kind of writer who can describe someone with just a few keys words and they spring to life. These are stories of tough men (and a not a few women) in tough times. Don't expect stories to end the way you think they might, this is Elmore Leonard after all, but it's always worth the ride to find out. A great book to read on the train or bus on your commute. The stories really take you away." (read more)

Gain
by Richard Powers
Rachel's Comments:
"The perfect intertwining of the dual story lines was a fantastic technique. Both story lines had me enthralled and it was a little frustrating to interrupt my deep immersion to switch back and forth, but taken in totality, it became one of those 'gestalt' experiences, where the sum was greater than the parts! I highly recommend this particular book and am looking forward to reading more by this author." (read more)

The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914
by Christopher Clark
Peter's Comments:
"A Middlemarch of foreign affairs, Clark delves deep into the historical record and shows us how his sleepwalking characters, countries as well as individuals, confronted with what might have been the Third Balkan War, unleashed the horror of the First World War. Thoughtful and clearly written commentary places meticulously researched history in context. While certainly a cautionary tale, Clark also carefully explains, despite disturbing similarities to our own times...that simple parallels do not always exist to the Europe of one hundred years ago." You
by Austin Grossman
Ryan's Comments:
"A fun and idiosyncratic ride through the videogame world....[I]f you've found yourself clutching your controller (or hammering your keypad) at 2am when you really should be doing something else, this book might be for you....The author writes with a clear fan-boy love of videogames, of their development history, of the stories they sort-of tell....How would you make the ultimate game? Really rather a more nuanced question than one might at first expect." (read more)

Dandelion Hunter: Foraging the Urban Wilderness
by Rebecca Lerner
Arwa's Comments:
"I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Becky's adventures and quirky friends in 'Dandelion Hunter.' It's accessible, fun, and made me laugh out loud on several instances.
Before I picked up the book, my idea of foraging was digging around for the ripest mango at Whole Foods. I'm not sure this book has inspired me to go out guns-blazing to earn my foraging merit badge, but it has changed the way I look at the greenery growing in my back yard." (read more)

My Bread: The Revolutionary No-Work, No-Knead Method
by Jim Lahey and Rick Flaste
Ann's Comments:
"I have baked bread for years but I could never make an 'artisan' style bread with a crisp crust and dense interior. This book is the answer. I have tried the other books out there but found the dough difficult to work with. This method is incredibly easy, I got perfect results the first time. I look forward to trying all the variations, including pizza and focaccia." (read more)

The Son
by Philipp Meyer
Laney's Comments:
"'The Son' is, flat-out, the most incredible book to be written about Texas in a long time. The well-written, easy-to-follow story covers over 100 years of a family's history, from the latter 1800s, when Comanches still lived free in West Texas, through modern oil-centric Houston. Meyer obviously meticulously researched all aspects of Texas history and the peoples involved, but does not let these details detract from this splendid book. Comparisons have been made between him and other famous writers, but I disagree; Meyer has a unique voice which is rich, strong, most entertaining, and should not be missed." (read more)

The Panopticon
by Jenni Fagan
Nancy's Comments:
"'The Panopticon' should be required reading for anyone working with children and youth. The protagonist, Anais, had committed a number of petty offenses (and possibly one serious crime) while living in foster care, group juvenile facilities, and on the streets. She entered the Panopticon awaiting conviction and incarceration....The Panopticon (where they can observe you all the time) lacked the ability to reveal Anais' humanity. So Jenni Fagan in her terrific book made us see. If the ending seemed a little unreasonably happy, that was okay with me -- and Anais certainly deserved it." (read more)

Knitting from the Center Out: An Introduction to Revolutionary Knitting with 28 Modern Projects
by Daniel Yuhas
Marque's Comments:
"This is a well written book with a lot of tips about the technique. There are projects for everyone and every occasion. Toys, hats, blankets, sweaters, and socks. Good diagrams, and clearly written explanations of each step. I am an experienced knitter, used to reading poorly written patterns and able to figure out what the authors have left out assuming everyone would 'know' what was intended. I believe a novice knitter could complete these projects with just a little bit of help. Worth the price!" (read more)

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
by Ransom Riggs
Rachel's Comments:
"This was a delicious, quick summer read for me. Despite some challenging themes...the book really is a coming-of-age story with a strong plot and unique characters. Liberal doses of time travel and magical realism propel the action in directions that will surprise you. The story has a wonderful cinematic quality, and the author makes creative use of the antique photographs that are sprinkled throughout. Highly recommended!" (read more)

Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis
by Timothy Egan
Sharon's Comments:
"Who would predict Timothy Egan's book about Edward Curtis would be a page-turner? From the get-go I was pulled into the vortex of Egan's meticulous account of this obsessive photographer whose passion sent him to the brink of self-destruction. Is this what being a true artist is all about? Curtis left a legacy that few of us will see, but his chronicle of the American Indian will live as a superior gift to the world. Likewise, Egan's research has shed new light on the history of our first people. This is a book to have on the shelf and to share." (read more)

Of Bees and Mist
by Erick Setiawan
Rachael's Comments:
"Feminist fairy tales can be hard to come by. Feminist fairy tales that are well-written, captivating, and uniquely crafted are rarer still. However, Setiawan weaves a rich novel and receives an A+ for execution on all accounts. 'Of Bees and Mist' tells the story of several women drawn together both by fate and by magic. Their journeys are marked by the struggle for power and the transition into womanhood, ill-fated marriage, and the bond between mothers and daughters." (read more)

The Bookman's Tale: A Novel of Obsession
by Charlie Lovett
Lydia's Comments:
"'The Bookman's Tale'...took a gothic mystery with potential danger and married it to a beautiful love-story, full of tragedy on its own. It spoke of rebinding old books as lovingly as I touch the spines on my precious hardcovers, and I felt immediately that I had a connection with the protagonist, Peter Byerly....I loved almost everything about this book....If you are a fan (like I am) of Carlos Ruiz Zafon, then I think this story will appeal to you greatly." I too was a child (the oldest child too) of addict parents in Northeast Portland during the late 80s and early 90s so, the story of 'The Residue Years' deeply resonated with me....I found myself missing the characters and wondering what they were up to during the times I had to put the book down." Norman's Comments:
"For me, this is one of the greatest works of science fiction that I've read. It is right up there with Herbert's novel, 'Dune.' This novel does better than any other I've come across dealing with a first encounter with an alien civilization. The superb writing, and unique plot, and the unfolding of the interaction with an intelligent alien species, who's mindset and agenda are very different than humanity's, is incredibly rich and intriguing. I've read this work several times throughout my life and it has always engaged my imagination." (read more)
