Knives at Dawn: America's Quest for Culinary Glory at the Legendary Bocuse D'Or Competition
Knives at Dawn: America's Quest for Culinary Glory at the Legendary Bocuse D'Or Competition
by Andrew Friedman

Tammy's Comments:
"It always amazes me that even though you may already know the outcome of a competition, a movie depicting a historic event or a tragic biography, reading about things past can still exciting, stressful and surprising. Having already heard whom the winner of the 2009 Bocuse D'Or was, I still wanted to read what happened to Team USA. Once you get past some of the mind numbing details in this book, it was hard to put down. Having worked in numerous kitchens myself, I really felt the stress of what happened for the U.S. team. From the history of famous chefs such as Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulad and Paul Bocuse, to the unknown details smaller known chefs and commis, this is a great book for foodies." (read more)

"I came back to work 20 minutes late from lunch because the book was too good to put down. That was a dozen pages in. "I was eagerly awaiting the third in the trilogy, and I was not disappointed. Someone said that Margaret Atwood is the greatest living Canadian author -- I'll go one step further and say she's the greatest living author. No one else could create this incredible dystopian future. Contagious: Why Things Catch On

"'Contagious: Why Things Catch On' is very readable. Jonah Berger is not only intelligent and eloquent, but interesting. Having researched thousands of subjects and partnered with other professionals, his conclusions are believable and amazing. It is interesting why we prefer one thing over another, how marketers target us and influence our choices but also how WE influence them. Baseball in April and Other Stories
by Gary Soto

Scot's Comments:
"'Baseball in April' is a great little collection of short, accessible, beautifully written stories about the lives of a bunch of Latino kids growing up in California's Central Valley circa late last century. The stories filled me with nostalgia for a childhood lived in a time when I was already well into adulthood, in a place to which I've never been, and among people to whose culture I do not belong. In short, this is great literature." (read more)

David's Comments:
"Carla Norton presents a rapid fire, heart jumping book with her first novel. Based on real crimes concerning violence towards women, she is respectful of the subject and families who suffered through the horrors of having loved ones kidnapped and abused....Reeve has survived the worst of ordeals, yet through healing and ongoing therapy is able to reach out to others who have suffered as she has....It's a powerful ride through tough territory; I was fully engaged by the plot and Ms. Norton's exceptional writing. The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human
The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make Us Human
by Jonathan Gottschall

Scott's Comments:
"A testimony to the power of storytelling beyond one particular genre, this book provides a fascinating guide through the immense shift readers are experiencing at the beginning of the 21st century. Gottschall's mix of anecdotes, research, and 'Q' magazine style dry humor for the photo captions, lend a welcome sense of humor into what easily could have become a meta-cognitive text with only a limited intellectual audience. I recommend this book to anyone interested in stories, regardless of how much they like to read them compared to watch them or see them live." (read more)

The Weight of Water
The Weight of Water
by Anita Shreve

Suzanne's Comments:
"This book explores the lives of two different women. Jean is a modern-day photographer and journalist who goes to Smuttynose Island to do research on a crime of murder which took place more than 100 years ago. Upon discovering some new material in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, there are more questions than answers as to what really happened on the island many years ago. Shreve does an excellent job of exploring the lives of these two women, as only she can. Through subtle language and descriptions, she examines themes of jealousy, adultery, betrayal and loss....Don't start this book unless you have plenty of time to read. I was haunted and mesmerized by the ending long after I read the last page." (read more)
