A Man Called Ove
A Man Called Ove
by Fredrik Backman

Peggy's Comments:
"Quirky character got me interested in this book. And Ove is quirky! And I absolutely loved him!...The writing is wonderful, the characters excellent. I felt like I knew the whole neighborhood by the end of the book and I hated it to end....I laughed out loud, a lot. Lots of tender moments to that bring you to tears....A beautiful, funny tale of loss, love and reconciliation. I hope you get a chance to read it and fall in love with Ove too. We can all learn a lot from him." (read more)

Beautiful Music for Ugly Children
by Kirstin Cronn-Mills

Nadia's Comments:
"Fantastic read!...I absolutely LOVED this book. It was SO easy to connect to Gabe, he was so easy to like. The minute I started reading I was hooked and I wanted to know everything that was going to happen....Overall, this book was beautiful, honest, raw and so important. More people should read it, I'd definitely recommend it!" (read more)

Good Kings, Bad Kings
Good Kings, Bad Kings
by Susan Nussbaum

Jessica's Comments:
"A wonderfully truthful look at the world of 'challenged' children in an institution set in Chicago. The chapters are written from the perspective of some of the children, some of the adults who work at the institution [one of whom is herself in a wheelchair], as well as a person who works for the company which runs the institution....Yes there is much sadness, anger and frustration, but there are glimmers of hope and joy which had made bits and pieces of each of the character's stories stay with me long after I finished this book. This is a book which I would gladly recommend to anyone who wants to learn more about life as a 'challenged' person, and to anyone who wants a good read." (read more)

The Climb: Tragic Ambitions on Everest
The Climb: Tragic Ambitions on Everest
by Anatoli Boukreev and G. Weston Dewalt

Matt's Comments:
"Whilst many people know Jon Krakauer's 'Into Thin Air', sadly a lot are not aware of the ten or so other books documenting the disastrous 1996 Everest season. 'The Climb' is the book Anatoli Boukreev had to write in response to the harsh portrayal in 'Into Thin Air.' 'The Climb' is a carefully written account of the season from Anatoli's point of view and gives some counter balance to Jon Krakauer's version of the events. A lot of people involved now look back on the fateful date and remember Anatoli as one of the true heroes of the day. For anyone who has read 'Into Thin Air' this is a must read to get a better understanding of what happened." (read more)

The Archivist
The Archivist
by Martha Cooley

Susan's Comments:
"This 1998 book got good reviews when it was published, but never received the readership it deserved. I read it in 2000 and still think about it a few times a year, because it's one of those books you always hope to find one as good as....The book unwinds the backstories of [the]...characters, all of whom have lived in the shadow of the Holocaust. But Cooley allows her characters to inhabit a wonderful-terrible world, in which grief and tragedy co-exist with beauty, aspiration, jazz and belief in love. What really puts this book on the map is Cooley's writing -- piercing, fully realized, and luminous enough to lift this story above itself." (read more)

Jo Robinson has meticulously researched and now explains to an uneducated public just where these food are; how they are better; how to cook, eat and preserve them; and why we lost them." Hannah's Comments:
"Jasper Fforde is my favorite living author....His Thursday Next series is brilliant, hilarious, quirky and full of non-stop puns and plays on words. Troika
Troika
by Adam Pelzman

Kara's Comments:
"Adam Pelzman's novel 'Troika' is an unquestionably relevant work for contemporary readers, as it could be for readers of many (if not all) ages. From the first sentence to the very last, Pelzman signals the radical primacy of humanity to this work....In addition to the centrality of realistic, incredibly well-drawn characters -- and in particular two strong and unusual women...I would also call this a truly humane book due to: the generosity shown by the characters (implicit in the plot's nature and structure) and the hope the story can engender in the reader concerning the expansive potential of human relationships. I recommend this novel without reservation." (read more)

Sherwood Nation
Sherwood Nation
by Benjamin Parzybok

David's Comments:
"What makes this story, of a near-future climate dystopia in Portland, Oregon, unique, and distinguishes 'Sherwood Nation' from other dystopian novels, is that rather than focusing on the apocalyptic aspects of this future Portland, which are numerous, it focuses more on the DIY inventiveness of the citizenry in the face of crisis, on the opportunities that an unexpected crisis provide for all of us to rethink how we want to organize ourselves....[T]his book strikes a surprisingly hopeful note, showing how small individual acts, small but brave acts outside one's normal routine, can truly snowball into larger transformations." The Risk Pool
The Risk Pool
by Richard Russo

Lukas's Comments:
"Like John Irving, whom he is sometimes compared to, Richard Russo is a big-hearted, old fashioned (in the best sense of the word) novelist who immerses who in the lives of his characters and has little use for post-modernism or avant-garde experimentation. His second novel, 'The Risk Pool' (1988) takes place in a small, shabby New York town where the inhabitants live close to the edge and too close to each other. Like some of his other books, it centers on the strained relationship between a charming, but feckless father and his well-meaning, frustrated son....Also see 'Nobody's Fool,' and the Pulitzer-winning 'Empire Falls.' One of our best novelists." (read more)

The Good Life Lab: Radical Experiments in Hands-On Living
The Good Life Lab: Radical Experiments in Hands-On Living
by Wendy Tremayne

Coralsage's Comments:
"This book is an intriguing and useful mix of Tremayne's personal story from New York City to off-the-grid and a guide to creating and building the structures she details in the book, such as mixing paper concrete to build domes....I enjoyed this book because it is both readable on its own and serves as a guide to following her steps exactly. The tone is open and friendly and I was impressed." (read more)

"An incredible read! The complete loss of Lord Franklin's expedition has intrigued me since I first heard 'The Ballad of Lord Franklin' years ago....You don't have to be versed in the history to appreciate the story, however. Stuff Matters: Exploring the Marvelous Materials That Shape Our Man-Made World
by Mark Miodownik

Nikki's Comments:
"'Stuff Matters' is the first book I've ever read on materials science and found it fascinating and the perfect introduction! The language used in the book is not too scientific so it's so easy to understand whilst learning so much....I cannot express how perfect this book was in my opinion and I will definitely be continuing to look into both Mark Miodownik and materials science!"
