PRIZE DETAILS AND RULES FOR SWEEPSTAKES
No purchase necessary to win. Purchasing does not improve chances of winning.


SPONSORS:

1. HOW TO ENTER:
To enter the A Thousand Days in Venice Sweepstakes ("the Sweepstakes"), complete the fields provided on the Powells.com contest page (http://www.powells.com/contest_venice.html) and click the "enter" button. Entries must be submitted by August 22, 2002. Limit one (1) entry per person. All entries become the property of Powell’s Books. On August 23, 2002, all entries will be resubmitted to Algonquin Books to be compiled with entries made via other participants in the sweepstakes. Thereafter, the personal information submitted to Powells.com for entry in the sweepstakes will not be shared, sold, or disclosed to third parties in any form, for any purposes, at any time, either by Powell’s Books or Algonquin Books.

2. NEWSLETTER SUBSCRIPTION STATUS:
All sweepstakes entrants via Powells.com agree to try at least one edition of PowellsBooks.news. Entrants may cancel their subscription after receipt of the first edition by visiting https://www.powells.com/cgi-bin/list_manager and following the removal instructions provided.


3. ELIGIBILITY:
The Sweepstakes is open to persons who are legal residents of the continental United States and void outside the U.S., in Puerto Rico, and where prohibited. Must be eighteen years or older. Employees of Powell’s Books, Algonquin Books, and Workman Publishing and their immediate families are not eligible to enter. The Sweepstakes is void where prohibited and is subject to all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.


4. SELECTION OF WINNERS:
One grand-prize winner will be chosen in a random drawing conducted on or about September 6, 2002, from all eligible entries received. Winner will be notified by phone, mail, or e-mail by September 6, 2002. If the winner cannot be reached or does not acknowledge notification within five (5) days of the first notification attempt, the prize will be forfeited and an alternative winner will be selected at random from the remaining eligible entries. Winner will be required to sign an Affidavit of Eligibility and Liability/Publicity Releases within ten (10) days after the notification date, or an alternate winner will be selected at random from the remaining eligible entries received. Winner’s traveling companion will be required to sign an eligibility release before ticketing. ODDS OF WINNING DEPEND ON THE NUMBER OF ELIGIBLE ENTRIES RECEIVED.


5. PRIZES:
One grand-prize winner will receive a travel package for two consisting of round-trip coach airfare from the major airport nearest the winner’s home to Venice and three (3) nights standard double-occupancy hotel accommodation in Venice, a tasting tour of Venice with Marlena de Blasi, dinner for two at Al Mascaron, and two (2) copies of A Thousand Days in Venice. Blackout dates and other restrictions apply. All taxes and other expenses not expressly set forth above, including ground transportation, food and beverage, telephone and any laundry services are the paid responsibility of the winner. Travel must be completed between October 6, 2002, and April 31, 2003. If the winner’s companion is a minor, winner must be minor’s parent or legal guardian. Prizes are not transferable and may not be substituted or redeemed for cash by winners. Sponsors reserve the right to substitute prize for one of equal or greater value (approximate retail value: $5,000).


6. DISCLAIMER/PUBLICATION:
Winners assume all liabilities for any damages caused or claimed to be caused by participation in the Sweepstakes and/or the acceptance, awarding, receipt, use and/or misuse of the prizes, and winners release Algonquin Books, their parent companies, subsidiaries, and affiliated companies, their respective officers, directors, and employees, and Sponsors’ marketing and promotional agencies from any such liability with respect to, or arising out of, this Sweepstakes. Entering the Sweepstakes constitutes permission to Sponsors and their advertising and promotional agencies to use the winner’s name, photo, and likeness for advertising and publicity without further compensation, unless prohibited by law.


7. ADDITIONAL RULES:
Sponsors are not responsible for: (a) telecommunication, network, electronic, technical, or computer failures of any kind, for inaccurate transcription of entering information, for any human error, or for entries that are stolen, misdirected, garbled, delayed by computer transmissions, incomplete, illegible, corrupted, lost, late, damaged, and all such entries are void; and (b) inability to access the article on-line, or any other error or malfunction which may occur, including any injury or damage to any persons computer related or resulting from participating in the Sweepstakes. By participating in the Sweepstakes participants agree to those official rules and the decisions of Sponsors. Failure to comply to any of these rules may result in disqualification from the Sweepstakes. Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify from the Sweepstakes any person they believe has intentionally violated these rules. In the event the Sweepstakes is compromised or becomes technically corrected in any way, electronically or otherwise, that is beyond the control of Sponsors, Sponsors reserve the right to withdraw the transmission of the Sweepstakes and to select a winner from among all entries received up to the date of withdrawal.

Winner’s name can be obtained by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, P.O. Box 2225, Chapel Hill, NC 27515-2225.


All requests must be received by October 1, 2002.
