Gutenberg's Apprentice Gutenberg's Apprentice
by Alix Christie

As a lover of historical fiction, I am usually enticed by the book jacket, of most books I read. I find that if the book jacket catches my eye, I end up loving the book... so far that has held true!...Faith, trust and ingenuity are highlighted, in this well-written tale. As we know, the printing press, becomes one of the most important inventions in history, as well as changing the world of communication, as it was then known. (read more)

You and Me You and Me
by Padgett Powell

Perhaps his best and the funniest book I've read since 'Vernon God Little.' Like listening in on the conversations of your favorite great uncles, you know, the two literary hillbillies. Very quick, very funny. (read more)

Leviathan Wakes (Expanse Series #1) Leviathan Wakes (Expanse Series #1)
by James S.A. Corey

I don't read detective fiction, but I sure loved this element in 'Leviathan Wakes.' Miller was an interesting (flawed, thoughtful, human) character, and I enjoyed each of his chapters. Jim Holden was also good -- space cowboy with an ethical flair.... I liked how these two characters played off each other. They're both brilliant and idiotic. Idealistic and jaded. Selfish and utterly selfless....I'll be reading 'Expanse #2,' for sure. (read more)

Doctor Sleep Doctor Sleep
by Stephen King

I thought this sequel to 'The Shining' would be an excellent pre-Halloween October read — and I was not disappointed. Having read 'The Shining' this time last year, I was glad to note that I had no problem jumping right into the story, which begins a few years after the burning of the Overlook Hotel....I would suggest reading 'The Shining' before picking up 'Doctor Sleep' -- the movie just does not do the book justice and some might get confused over certain plot points. As King states in his Author's Note, 'Doctor Sleep' is a sequel to the novel, which is the true history of the Torrance family. (read more)

The Bone Clocks The Bone Clocks
by David Mitchell

I'll go ahead and say that this is a better novel than 'Cloud Atlas.'... The jumps in time, especially the first, occur at what seems like the worst possible time for the narrative, only to all be wound up together beautifully by the end of the novel. A very large book that seems daunting becomes one that is impossible to put down and ends up being read in a much shorter period of time than considerably smaller books. Fantastic read from one of the best novelists out there these days. (read more)
