Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened
by Allie Brosh

Once I caught up on her history, I was immediately moved by the way Brosh revealed herself through these stories, quite bravely so, exposing her innermost struggles with the world. It's tough to lay yourself bare, especially to an often unsympathetic internet audience who can just a quickly flame and roast as they can bolster and support. The best section in this compilation, hands down, were her struggles with depression. I don't suffer from that myself, but I think everybody has moments of depression and can relate (or at least empathize) with what she is saying. (read more)

Lunch at the Shop: The Art and Practice of the Midday Meal Lunch at the Shop: The Art and Practice of the Midday Meal
by Peter Miller

For those who know Peter Miller, you might think what I did when I first heard about this book: what does an architectural bookseller in Seattle know about cooking, to write a cookbook? Turns out, quite a bit, and, with the help of the Canal House brain trust, Chris Hirsheimer and Melissa Hamilton, he's written a terrific cookbook, full of great (achievable) recipes and general cooking advice. Nineteen Minutes Nineteen Minutes
by Jodi Picoult

Is there a word for that hangover-like feeling you get after reading a good book? When you just can't stop thinking about what you just read and wander through the day in a haze? Even if there isn't, this book definitely gave me that sensation. Really stunning, easy to read but with amazing depth and development in the characters...Jodi Picoult takes a difficult subject and manages to humanize it in ways I'm not sure many would attempt or think possible. Deenie Deenie
by Judy Blume

I read this book 35 or so years ago. At that time I had been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and this book helped me deal with being different, and stared at in school. It was a tremendous help. It helped me not feel like I was damaged or not a normal kid in school. Hats off to Judy Blume. I recommend all her books for kids to read, it will help them with problems they don't want to talk to their parents without having the stigma of seeing therapist! (read more)

Palo Alto: Stories Palo Alto: Stories
by James Franco

I am left breathless, stunned, disgusted, and mildly pleased. As a young adult myself at 19 years old, I personally have found it difficult to find books and movies which accurately represent my generation. However, James Franco has managed to capture the essence of adolescence. It's awkward, gritty, depressing, and also exhiliarating. If you're looking for something intellectual and relatable -- this is the book for you. (read more)

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (01 Edition) Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (01 Edition)
by Harriet Jacobs

Aside from being a non-fiction account of the life of a slave girl, this book is engrossing and you just cannot stop turning the pages to find out what is going to happen next. I could not put the book down as the suspense to keep this girl safe from this relentlessly obsessed perverse man was always looming as she tries to stay hidden and live. (read more)
