Slouching towards Bethlehem: Essays Slouching towards Bethlehem: Essays
by Joan Didion

A wonderful collection of essays by the remarkably insightful Joan Didion. Flowing prose and vividly detailed vignettes combine to shape the reader's view of the world as Didion sees it: beautifully flawed and always unforgettable. (read more)

Cinnamon and Gunpowder Cinnamon and Gunpowder
by Eli Browne

This was one of the most surprisingly satisfying reads of my summer. Picture a cook from a Jane Austen-esque kitchen ending up on a pirate ship. Suspend your disbelief. All will be told in time. Author Eli Brown weaves in reminders of the harsh realities of colonialism, and descriptions of tough living conditions that would apply to life both on- and off-ship in the 1800's. But the vivid characters make the entire read fun. (read more)

The Sea of Tranquility The Sea of Tranquility
by Katja Millay

Every once in a while a story comes along that captures the imagination and the heart from the very beginning. This is one of those books. This is a standout novel in every possible way: flawless writing, superb characterizations, and breathtaking romance. The story of Nastya and Josh is so compelling, so believable, so gut-wrenchingly real....A truly unforgettable book. (read more)

Life Is a Wheel: Love, Death, Etc., and a Bike Ride Across America Life Is a Wheel: Love, Death, Etc., and a Bike Ride Across America
by Bruce Weber

Weber's writing style is casual and engaging, making this a very easy and pleasant read....As a regular bicycle-commuter, I found myself feeling on the one hand that this would be such a great trip to take, and on the other hand wondering why anyone would take on such a challenge! (read more)

Astonish Me Astonish Me
by Maggie Shipstead

This book was so good that I sat down and read it in one sitting. It's beautifully written, and the characters are intriguing....This book gives snapshots of various types of relationships; including friendships, parental bonds, romantic and partnerships. It helped me gain perspective on how human beings depend on one another, how we fall in love without romance or how romance for a passion (in this case dance) can drive love. 'Astonish Me' is a breath of fresh air and I loved every moment with it. (read more)

Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever? Your Fathers, Where Are They? And the Prophets, Do They Live Forever?
by Dave Eggers

I read this book on the MAX and laughed out loud so often that people stopped to ask me what I was reading, if that isn't an indicator of the excellence of a book -- I don't know what is. At the same time, it's an incisive deconstruction of the current zeitgeist and delves into issues such as: entitlement, masculinity, and government. It was so on point with current issues that I want to believe that Egger's wrote it within the last few months. (read more)

The Sea Inside The Sea Inside
by Philip Hoare

Hoare is a great writer -- how he describes the ocean and different species that live there, or near there -- including extinct species. He made me want to sail around the world. But the book is not just about the physical sea -- it is about the connectivity of all things. How we connect to the earth, to the sea, to everything. 'The Sea Inside' made me long for the ocean and weep for the destruction that humans have brought to it (and to all nature). (read more)
