eBook Terms and Conditions
EBooks are wonderful things, but the technology continues
to have certain limitations. Below are the terms and conditions
we ask customers to agree to for each of the three formats we support.
Adobe eBook titles
- Software compatiblity:
We strongly recommend using
Adobe Reader 7 to download and read your Adobe eBooks.
Adobe Reader 7 allows you to take
full advantage of all the capabilities of Adobe ebooks, including
printing and backing up your titles. Please note that the newer Adobe Reader software (Adobe Reader 8) does not support ebooks, and that the latest
Adobe ebook software (Adobe Digital Editions) does not yet have all the
capabilities of Adobe Reader 7. So, for now, you must use Adobe Reader 7 software if you would like to take full advantage of the books in Adobe ebook format.
- Handheld devices:
The Adobe ebook format does not lend itself to reading on handheld devices.
It's not impossible, but for the most part we don't recommend downloading
books in the Adobe format if reading on a handheld device is your goal.
- Adobe Reader titles can be downloaded only four (4) times.

be printed (and how often and how much) can be found on the product page about your title on our site.
- Adobe Reader titles cannot be returned, as once they are installed on your computer they can not be taken back by us.
- Powells.com can claim no responsibility for lost Adobe Reader titles due to computer crash, download to the incorrect computer, or failure to download as prescribed above.
Microsoft Reader titles
- The Microsoft Reader titles we offer are not readable on all handheld devices (Pocket PCs). If you are planning to read Microsoft Reader titles on a handheld computer, please click here to find out if your handheld is compatible. Please note: Powells.com cannot be held responsible for orders mistakenly placed with the intention of reading titles on an incompatible handheld device.
- The Microsoft Reader titles available at Powells.com are considered "Owner Exclusive Content" by Microsoft Inc. and can be downloaded up to four (4) times only. After those 4 downloads, Microsoft Reader titles cannot be redownloaded or transfered to other computers, even in the event of computer upgrade or the reformatting of drives.
- Reading titles available at Powells.com requires the installation of Microsoft Reader version 2.0 and activation using a Passport account. For more information about activating MS Reader, click here.
- Assume that your Microsoft Reader titles cannot be printed. Also please assume that ebook content cannot be copied via any other electronic means.
- Microsoft Reader titles cannot be returned, as once they are installed on your computer they can not be taken back by us.
- Powells.com can claim no responsibility for lost Microsoft Reader titles due to computer crash, download to the incorrect computer, or failure to download as prescribed above.
Palm Reader titles
Please be aware that single-use credit card numbers cannot be used when purchasing Palm eBooks. Why? Well, the DRM (Digital Rights Management) system for Palm eBooks works by creating an encryption code around your credit card number. To open your Palm eBook, you'll need to enter the credit card number you used to purchase the title into your Palm eBook Reader software. This makes the use of single-use credit card numbers an obstacle when purchasing Palm eBooks. Our apologies.
However, single-use credit card numbers pose no difficulty when purchasing Microsoft or Adobe eBooks. So, if you'd rather use single-use credit card numbers, we would suggest one of those alternate formats.
