"I wouldn't say you start to take it for granted, because you don't, but after a while it becomes normal to be outside and on the road," Fup tells her inquisitive nephew, Roosevelt. "You don't stop being scared — at night, especially — but you get used to the fear. You need to be more careful, is all. You need to stay focused. But that's why it was great to pick up Wiggums and Joe along the way."

"They took some of the pressure off," Roosevelt suggests.

"Exactly. Two extra sets of eyes and ears. And they're not so citified as we are, living in comfortable homes," Fup admits. Over by a stack of still-sealed boxes, her bowl is brimming with dry food, as it's been since the day she returned. "I never stopped missing the bookstore," she assures Roosevelt. "I just didn't have much time to think about it. Mostly I was too busy just keeping safe."

Dave chimes in, "I just read a novel by Ian McEwan that was like that. A couple goes to Venice on vacation, and the book is written so that you see how much effort it takes them just to make sense of their surroundings. There's practically nothing in the story about their lives back home because they can't afford to think about anything that can't help them now."

Roosevelt pretends to nuzzle Fup's ear. "Is it my imagination," he whispers, "or does no one here have a life outside of books?"
