Sleeping for hours at a time on top of the photocopy machine, passing entire days without wandering farther from the back office than the bestsellers display, it's easy to forget there's a big world outside the bookstore. Customers push through the doors. Where do they come from? Where do they go from here?

"So you're saying," the reporter asks Fup, "that a cat sometimes feels a certain itch in her paws, an urge to get out and see the world?"

"Not an itch as much as an absence of itch," Fup tries to explain. "Maybe it's all in my head, but I swear my paw pads start to smooth over when I've spent too long indoors. No trees to climb... and these tile floors.... My claws: use 'em or lose 'em, you know?"

"But Powell's would prefer that you didn't take another long trip?"

"I want to stay here and be a store cat," Fup assures the local writer. "It's a good life. But is a modest indoor habitat in the attic — think of it as a workout room — an unreasonable request?"
