Several bolts of lightning streak through the dark sky. Seconds later, thunder booms.

"Woof," Fup mumbles.

"Woof?" Zooey asks.

"When we were young," Fup explains, "my sister Ro was scared of storms. Our father told her, 'Don't be ridiculous' — we were gathered under the porch of Aunt Orono's house, keeping out of the rain. The sky lit up again, and Dad whistled, impressed. 'A sharp set of claws on that one,' he said.

"Ro asked him, 'Claws?' She was always the most gullible. Then the thunder exploded again, and Dad said simply, 'Dogs.'"

Zooey perks up. "What about dogs?"

"What looks like a flash of lightning, our father convinced Ro, is actually a mischievous cat in the clouds, baring its claws. When the big, lazy dogs on the ground complain, thunder is the commotion they make."

"Did that help Ro get over her fear of storms?"

"It did," Fup admits, "but for years she was terrified of big dogs."
