"Well?" Cashew asks.

Ten cats in a cone of streetlamp light: Fup and nine friends staring at her, waiting for direction.

Blocks and blocks away, a siren trails into the west hills. From up in the sky comes the plaintive wail of a dog, howling along. Not a flying dog (the realization passes over several cats' faces at once), only a pet bound by the balcony of the condo tower.

"What are we going to do now?"

Fup considers the options.

"Slumber party in the attic," she declares.

Bessie calls it a night. "I'm beat, already," she yawns. Lochness volunteers to walk her home. Oglesby doesn't recognize the pairing for what it is, or rather what Bessie and Lochness mean it to be, and absently invites himself along.

The rest of them will stay up for hours yet, hiding in overstock shelves, tearing at Fup's massive scratching post, snacking, wrestling, and intermittently staring into space, deep in cat thought. Until, by and by, morning dawns, the staff arrives, and the bookstore opens for business.

And that's how seven cats wind up at the weekly book club round table.
