Hard as Oreo tries to keep his white belly hidden in the short grass, that bright undercarriage gives him away every time. Along the wall to the basement window, lamplight creeps within inches of the house. Fup watches from the top of a picnic table in the yard, calling him out again and again.

"Saw you," she reports. Then a moment later, "Saw you again." Each time he doubles back to the fence by the neighbor's yard.

If he wanted, he could simply ignore her. Fup would let him go downstairs. It's not as if she'd chase him, or even mind his going. There's nothing in Bear's basement but the same winter menu of bugs and mice Oreo might hunt in his own house.

But it's getting to the basement that matters, sneaking in undetected. Where's the sport in walking straight in?

"Saw you."

"Did not!"

"Now I do."

This could go on for hours, or at least until Bear gets home.
