The rain has returned at last. Odd, but for weeks it was as if the city had up and moved. The same buildings, the same parks, the same cats, relocated to some sunnier part of the world.

Somewhere out of view, walls rose up to hold the storms at bay; or the clouds had more important business somewhere else; or some creepy feeling overcame them, scaring them away.

You never knew. Fifteen some-odd years ago, when Fup moved into the bookstore, desks hadn't yet been overrun with computers; you could walk and jump and climb without concern for cables, wires, and plugs. Back then, the attic didn't hum like it does now — floorboards creaked, sure, and windowpanes rattled in the wind, but Fup took up residence long before the static hum settled in.

Sometimes things changed and didn't change back.

Raindrops grab at the window and crawl down the pane. Fup tracks their descent while Lisa scratches her ear, her cheek, her chin. You wouldn't think you could miss dark skies — until you do.
