Wings twitching, eyes angled back toward its nape, toward its captor, the finch is quite alive in Bagheera's mouth. Shaking in his feathers, yet pleasantly relieved by the cat's gentle grip, all gums and no teeth. Meanwhile, a customer stands inside the glass door, watching, mumbling back toward the register, "Um, there's, outside, a cat, and, um..."

"Fup!" Lisa shouts. "Get out there now!"

Comfortably settled on a blanket in the front window display, Fup turns toward the entry and spies Bagheera on the stoop. She leaps down and comes running to the door, where the customer cracks it open for her to pass.

"One more time and he's not welcome back," Lisa reminds her. What the finch must be thinking, Fup can only imagine: Here comes a second cat; one apparently wasn't enough.

"Let go," Fup says.

Bagheera tilts his head, confused.

"Hunting is against store policy."

He deposits the bird on the step, where it finds its footing, shivers from tail to bill, spreads its wings, and flies away. "So much for the natural order of things," Bagheera complains.

"Lawyers," Fup replies.
