"The shadows were freaking her out," Oreo tells our web design team.

"She was reading a book about Dracula," Bear reminds everyone.

But Fup points to Oreo. "He's what spooked me, sneaking up on me."

To you, our customers, our readers, Powells.com looks like it has for the last few years. But Fup and the rest of Powell's staff moved into our new web site last week. We're turning the house into a home, decorating, breaking in the furniture, exploring — getting it ready for guests.

Fup describes wandering into the events calendar and winding up somehow in a novel about fanged human beings.

"What's next?" Bear asks facetiously. "People with claws?"

"It wasn't the book."

"We heard a shout," Amy confirms. "Farley thought a page must have broken."

"It was the shadows," Oreo insists.

"The shadows are cozy," Fup assures the designers. "It was him."
