"Some days," Fup reflected, "I hear a bird singing, and all I think is, 'Pretty.'"

The other cats didn't respond. Bagheera and Oreo and Peanut Butter Joe, in the park past dinnertime.

Fup went on, "Then I think, 'Imagine sitting all that time on your eggs, having to lay them so long before they're ready to hatch. How inconvenient that would be.'"

It couldn't be comfortable. And you'd have to be very careful, getting up and sitting down. On the one hand, your body would stay yours. Undeformed. A huge plus, right there. But you'd be stuck in your nest for the duration, the same view from the same tree or stanchion or gable.

Bagheera assured her, "Friends would visit."

"Would they?"

"I bet they would," said Peanut Butter Joe.

The sun was an hour gone. The sky wrung the last purples from its light. Oreo noted, "I've never seen a baby shower in a tree."
