Fup says, "I can't swim."

"Find me a cat who can," Bear replies, "and I'll show you some nervous trout."

From the depths of the Eastbank Esplanade, downtown seems to be standing up to its waist in earth, a clique of ten- and twenty-year-old towers half-buried in the lowland across the river, taken root.

One minute the sun is a bright yellow ball; the next a patch of fluffy clouds blots it out — and immediately the temperature seems to drop ten degrees where they're sitting, not on the esplanade precisely but nearby on a rocky outcropping patched intermittently with barnacles and moss. Ghost ships pushing through the bottom of a forest.

"Did you know," Fup asks, "that a hundred years ago Northwest Twenty-ninth Avenue, that whole neighborhood, was underwater? It was only filled later, for industry."

The Willamette fluctuates season-to-season thirty feet in depth. Fup has been reading up. She wouldn't have guessed — but then again, she'd never really given it much thought.

Bear asks, "Think they warned the fish before draining it?"

"Shoo, fish! Shoo! Swim away!"

"Or men in rowboats, sprinkling fish food over the side, trying to lure them out."

"Here, fishy fishy! Dinnertime!"
