October. After three months of sun, suddenly you can't step foot outdoors without a good chance of getting soaked. Best-case scenario for a jaunt in the park? A muddy belly, and the residue of rotting leaves stuck to your paws. Meanwhile each day the sun rides closer to the horizon, like a platter knocked from its high shelf, descending in slow motion irretrievably toward the floor.

On the other hand: It's cat show season.

Fup doesn't care so much who wins. It's not the winning that matters, but the drama, the personalities... the unprecedented prime-time coverage. Forty-nine weeks a year, she's unlikely to stumble upon domestic feline programming outside the wee hours of the night, and certainly not on the networks. Then come these sixteen days. She's compelled to watch. Huge blocks of time are set aside, regularly scheduled appointments cancelled; for days on end she camps out at the corner pet store in front of the big screen.

Commercials for kibble, for carpeted scratching posts, for monogrammed rhinestone collars. Cats on the morning news! Let the clouds roll in. Who needs daylight? Fup's feeling good about her brackets in this year's friendly pool.
