Either Fup can sleep on her bed in the office, or else she can opt for the blanket upstairs.

She can sleep anywhere she wants, of course, but after all these years her favorite spots hold sway. The time-tested. Wake up safe and warm in the same dark nook enough times, eventually you stop taking it for granted. You settle in. Nights go by nowadays, consecutively, when Fup doesn't once imagine a life outdoors.

But: crickets and moths, empty roads, quiet parks; the city, a sprawling, dog-free zone; friends without curfews, campaigning for her company. (Do they sleep?)

Two hours ago, Amber locked up and said goodnight.

It's the cat door's fault. Times like this Fup conspires to break it and spare herself the choosing, to stay or go.
