Fup woke not five minutes ago, on her bed atop the filing cabinet. She feels as if she's been sleeping for hours, but that can't be. No one has turned on the lights or switched the radio to NPR. She still has the store to herself.

"You're like a little, hairy Buddha," the strange man told her last night. Lisa's party comes back now in bits and pieces. She'd been sitting still for ages, and he must have been watching — she'd completely zoned out to the sound a dozen people make, sipping all at once from paper cups.

He crouched to Fup's height. Suddenly they were eye-to-eye. From his right ear, a conch shell dangled. Small, but just the one. A simple gold stud clung to his left ear.

She pictured the wisdom pooling inside her, past her ribs or even her shoulders. Were she to lean one way or the other, it would slop like water against her sides. The splashing would expose her. All that room to spare.

Or maybe he just meant she could lose a few pounds.
