How best to describe the state of Fup's brain today? Goopy. Stubborn. Slow. Like a power outage on a rainy afternoon, daylight washing through her ears and eyes, exerting gray dominion over the furniture.

Bear asks, "Any ideas for Saturday?" They've been invited to a party. Undoubtedly, they will go.

Fup isn't sleeping, she isn't feeling ill, nor is she at all unhappy with Bear — but the question skids off her. Possibly she has fallen under some kind of trance.

"It ought to be fun," says Bear, out loud, to himself. "I wonder if Oreo and Bagheera are invited. Maybe they'd want to go with us."

A shiver starts in the base of her neck and spreads along her spine. These are the dividends of their years together, Fup supposes. He can carry on the conversation without her. She closes her eyes to summon the shiver back.

"We'll decide later," Bear says. And Fup purrs.
