The boy in the hammock wakes suddenly as Fup comes bursting out across the lawn, leaps the low fence, races diagonally across the street through traffic and disappears down an alley. It's not really Fup, of course, it's her stunt-double, but after editing no one will know the difference.

Fup, cozy in her trailer, opens another can of salmon. Outside, a dozen excited kittens wait patiently on the sidewalk, pens in paw. Meanwhile, a graying cat built like a fire hydrant lurks on the corner of Couch Street, selling unofficial Fup merchandise out of a duffel bag: posters, collars, bootleg copies of the spoken word CD Fup recorded with Charles Bukowski.

Bear says, "He's making a fortune off you."

"Don't you recognize him?" Fup asks.

He looks again, trying to remember. Why is that short, stocky body so familiar?

"Benny," he mumbles to Fup. "It's Benny, from Top Cat!"

Fup nods, distributing the last of the salmon into souvenir serving bowls (left over from her long-forgotten variety special, Fup's Cat Family Hour – those plastic bowls are worth a small fortune on eBay these days); she garnishes each with a sprig of parsley, grabs the pitcher of milk off the counter, opens the door amid the clamor of those ravenous young fans, and steps down to entertain.
