Fup's paws always chafe in the desert. Moses knows a guy who makes salves from cactus juice and manna. "But you know the price of manna these days," Moses says now, and Fup nods.

What does he mean by that? she wonders. Does he want me to pay for the salve? I can pay for the salve, she thinks to herself. Is he saying I couldn't afford it? Is Moses saying he can't get a good deal on salves?

If only she could move her arms. If only she could lick her paws.

A bright flash startles her awake. She finds herself buried up to her chin in the sand. Zooey, the yellow Lab whom Bear has been hanging out with lately, is sitting in front of her, panting like the mindless dog he is, a camera hanging from a strap around his neck. Where Bear has disappeared to she can only guess.

If there's a bright side to this humiliating episode, at least it's finally September. This is the last beach trip of the year.
