Shortly after midnight, when trick or treaters have long gone to sleep and the city's bars have emptied of all but those who need not work in the morning, the members of this year's All-City Black Cat team will begin to gather in Tom McCall Waterfront Park to submit their scorecards and exchange stories from a long, exhausting night spent darting in front of unsuspecting pedestrians and racing past the grills of stopped cars, all in the name of charity.

As usual, Fup will be in the park doing her part, pumping warm milk from thermoses for the troops of tired (and, in all likelihood, wet) volunteers. If we can trust The Oregonian's exit polls at costume rental outlets and second-hand clothing shops, this may be the campaign's most successful year yet. Portland residents seem finally to have accepted the idea that a moderate cash donation to local cat causes is more than worth circumventing whatever bad luck is due.

Not everyone, however, is pleased. "Already I'm buying candy for half the neighborhood," one shopper in our Technical store complained, "now I'm subsidizing cat college tuition programs? What am I to do? I can't afford the bad luck or the donation!"

Fup, for her part, is sticking to her guns. "At least we're providing recourse," she explains yet again. "Keep the bad luck if you want it," she tells the customer, "but future cats will remember my generation as the first that offered an alternative."

Among the selections nominated for Best American Writing by Pets 2000 are Bob Barker Barry's sordid and hilarious hallucinogenic escapades with Lynda; a tragic, posthumous prose poem by Marrow Irving; and Sadie Louise Lamott's "Spoon River Sadie Louise," a wildly metered exploration of the cross-cultural dynamics within a household occupied by dogs, cats, birds, and small children. The sheer intellect of these collected pieces will renew your faith in dogs.
