While Gus waits outside on the wire, staring through the window at Fup and Bear, Vicki tells the phone room staff, "Just let them be. They need to work things out between them. They just need time."

On Saturday Gus had flown in through the phone room's fourth-floor window – by mistake, though he wouldn't admit it. For more than an hour, he perched on one of the big exposed beams in the ceiling. Finally someone offered him popcorn is how the story goes, and after a while he couldn't resist so he flapped down to grab the salty kernels off Tracy's hard drive, his slippery bird talons scratching on the purple plastic casing. He'd been hanging out inside ever since – until word spread to the Tech Store and the cats.

"How much longer are you gonna keep up this macho act?" Fup asks Bear again now.

Bear stretches his paw, taking care to reveal his sharp claws. "Not much longer," he admits. "He's no fun to bully, just sitting there."

Gus continues to rock lightly on the power line, pretending not to care. Then another seagull lands a few feet over him, and a third. Gus squawks.

"The seagulls are going to attack," Miel announces. "We should have stopped this while we had a chance."

"The seagulls are not going to attack," Vicki assures everyone.

A phone rings, startling the tense staff. Fup remains prone on the window sill. She whispers, "Should I be calling friends?"

It's hard to know how serious she is.
