"Cats live in the store and you didn't bother to tell me?" Gus shouts from his perch outside on the telephone wire. "How do I know there aren't more than just the two I saw?"

You should have heard them kvetching, those seagulls. The one with the scar on his bill had Gus convinced that we'd only lured him inside as a favor to Fup and Bear. That we'd set him up. Thankfully, it's only Gus on the wire now – the others flew off toward the waterfront when Fup, wanting to avert a pointless showdown (and the inevitable negative publicity it would bring), convinced Bear to leave.

"Come in, already!" Wendy Ann calls to him. "They're probably at the train station by now."

In fact, they are not. At the first sign of rain the cats found cover in the cab of a giant earth digger and they've been there ever since, at a construction site in the Pearl, listening to the wind and watching raindrops explode against the glass.

"I have a lot of bird friends," Bear insists, pausing before he adds, "in Chicago." Fup sighs and scooches deeper into the warm seat cushion.

Meanwhile, back in the phone room Billy's patience has run out. He puts a customer on hold, takes off his headset, sticks his face out the window and shouts, "Gus! If you don't get inside this minute you can forget about us calling you Touchtone!"

Gus looks left and right. His friends have long deserted him. The cats, as far as he can tell, are gone. He shrugs and flaps across Couch Street to the window, content to salvage a cool nickname from this embarrassing affair.
