I follow Fup through the Park blocks, over to Sixth Avenue and north to the train station. At the end of the empty platform, I sit against the wall while Fup tells me about her old life on the road – before she gave up the roaming, checked herself into the animal clinic, cleaned up, and found a bookish life among software engineers and architects in the aisles of our Tech store.

Three minutes early, The Coast Starlight rolls in on the rails. Hundreds of passengers spill out of its cars onto the platform. "He's coming out of car number 6," Fup says, motioning to the woman with the green box in her hand. A Siamese cat sits inside, pressing his face to the silver bars across the windows, staring at Fup.

"Bear is as handsome as you said he would be," I tell her.

"He's aged well," she agrees.
