Fup's a third generation store cat. Any questions about footwear, she's the one to ask. How she retained so much industry knowledge from those formative years in a Toledo shoe store is a mystery to us. But this time of year it's the woods of Maine she misses.

"Fup's grandparents rented a small space in the back of a Boston-based department store until the great cat baby boom forced massive emigration to the less-catted rural branches of northern New England," Sebastian tells Bear, as if Bear doesn't know. "Fup was raised in Ohio, but she was born in Maine. Not many people know that."

But cats sure know it, Bear thinks. "Sebastian," he wants to explain, "you have no idea how much cats know about Fup." But never mind. Where is Fup, anyway? She said she'd be back from her pottery class hours ago.

"Benicio del Toro's cat asked if I would get Fup's autograph for her yesterday," Bear tells Sebastian.

"Really?" Sebastian asks him. "You met Benicio del Toro's cat?"
