The lights go up for the big finale, the curtain opens. Oliver Klappenpuss skateboards off the giant half-pipe and the chorus line parts to accommodate his landing. Cheers rise from the dark belly of the stadium. The band turns it up a notch.

Bear enters from the wing, in top hat and tails, tap dancing his way across the lip of the stage. ("The feline reincarnation of Astaire," the Times raved.) The girls in the crowd are going wild.

Third verse, same as the first – who's not singing along by this point? Eddie rears on his hind legs and whinnies like you haven't heard a horse whinny since Hee Haw. How does that old horse sustain such vocal range?

Finally, the throng of animals and booksellers parts, and Fup scampers through to the front of the stage. The crowd roars. Fup grabs the mike and the band stops on a dime. One minute she's impersonating Truman Capote and the next she's reciting Sharon Olds. She's all energy up there, a literary firestorm. "Busy as fission," the folks in the Tech store like to say.

Somehow, she's handled the jump to stadium shows without sacrificing the immediacy of last year's lauded club dates. Say what you will about her politics, but Fup still leaves it all on the stage.
