Eddie's train is late. Fup and Bear continue to wait for him out back of the station.

Saturday, before he departed, Eddie had walked forty feet of track, hooves on rails, all the while balancing both cats on his back. (He slipped off almost immediately when Bear tried to stand on his head.) They'd planned to try again tonight, but now it's dark, too dark for track-walking.

"What if Clara didn't come with him?" Fup asks Bear, but she immediately answers the question, herself: "Clara's going to be with him. She can't have said no." All weekend, Fup has assumed Clara would accept Eddie's modest proposal, but what does Fup know of horses?

Fup finally says aloud: "What do I know of horses?"

Bear shrugs. What does he know of women? Moonlight glints off the tracks. Acrophobic ladders hugging reliable earth, he considers, ladders lain down for fear of falling. We're each scared of something. He imagines a number, like Pi – indivisible, enigmatic – the constant by which our ignorance, multiplied, becomes fear.
