"Those cats sure can sing," Bear remembers, turning up the volume in anticipation of the instrumental interlude ahead, "but the dogs couldn't play guitar to save their lives."

It was true. Powell's had signed a pair of virtuoso llamas to handle guitar duties for the newsletter's annual musical extravaganza, but their plane had been grounded by security concerns in Bolivia. The dogs were local, last minute replacements. The dachshund, in fact, a bassist by trade, had never before played lead on stage. As a result, the cats, not just Fup but the back-up singers too, had been forced to carry the show.

On the live recording, if you adjust the channels just so, you can clearly make out Fup's voice accessorizing the clumsy, simplified notes of the dachshund's awkward solo.

Bear returns the volume to a more comfortable level and checks across the room again to note the time – not yet nine o'clock. You'd think after all these years that Fup would tire of the long, late nights helping with inventory counts, but no. Bear's spending his night with the stereo.
